Lilllabettt
Remember this thread where you all gave me the courage to keep teaching?http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/topic/116143-what-should-i-do/ Thanks to you, I made it. And because I made it, I got to make this decision: http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/topic/127724-at-a-fork-in-the-road/ and you helped me with that too. Now I have got to grad school. And I am glad I did it because it is so cool. Hogwarts is real people!!!! Sadly I am now stressed to the max (notice a trend) because of all the gunners. Gunners gunners everywhere, beneath the bed and behind the stairs. I can't quit because I'm in too deep. But please say a prayer for me. Everything is a competition and every minute is demanding. if you are unfamiliar with the term gunner please see below. fyi the person they are making fun of does exist and seems to be replicating exponentially. warning: use of scatological term in minute 1. http://youtu.be/Mrlnh3vebSc
4588686
Your enemies. Give us their names. We shall lay waste to them. They will beg for death long before they taste it. Edited September 22, 2013 by Hasan
arfink
I will pray for ya. I don't know if I can offer much for advice or encouragement, because I don't understand grad school, never having been. About the best I can suggest is to skip the bubble gum and go straight to kicking arse. ;)
Selah
Your enemies. Give us their names. We shall lay waste to them. They will beg for death long before they taste it. And he's not kidding either. He used to be a Sultan,.
Basilisa Marie
Do the professors encourage gunner-ing? If so, I am so, so sorry. If not, ignore them, they're fools who will burn out.
TheresaThoma
:hugs: Eventually those people will learn to tone it down or they will wash out. Ignore them and stay focused!
Comingback
I went through grad school for two degrees, but also did a year of CPE at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. We worked a lot with the new residents and interns. I was falling out laughing at the video because it is really true of some med people. Yes, they do exist. Hang in there; sending prayers for you. AnneLine
oh yeah! Grad school survivor... Easily one of the best books I ever read was one titled Lovestrong by Dorothy Greenbaum, M.D. She was one of the first women in the 1970's to manage to juggle marriage, small children, starting in her late 20's with a degree in English (NOT premed!)... and she made it thru premed, medical school and internship, and has had a wonderful career as a pediatrician. Oh... and with HUGE family crisis type stuff happening throughout. (I don't give the specifics, 'cause I don't want to spoil the story for anyone who can find the book!!!!) (you'd probably have to find it at a library these days....). Shecredited her ability to make it through it to the incredibly strong love of her husband and family, and yes, for the support she got through her Jewish faith. And doing what she could and not trying to do what she couldn't. In other words, BALANCE. She does tell some pretty incredible 'gunner' stories in that book, btw. Yup, they burn out... or the fumble with the equipment... and playing with guns, even intellectual ones... people can get hurt. Often the person with the gun, but not exclusively. So watch your back. And the rest of you need to work as a team. You can do this thing. And we'll pray for you and do what we can to support you. Adding you and your classmates the prayer list, Lillabettt. (And since you have FINALLY taught me how to spell your name, you can't be TOO bad a teacher, and I bet you are a FANTASTIC student....) Luigi
Watch the movie The Paper Chase, just to keep things in perspective. You'll make it - you're smart, you're motivated, you have good work/study skills, you've got us praying for you, AND you made it through your teaching assignment, didn't you? You've got 'em all out-gunned!
Luigi
And when you compare grad school to your teaching assignment.... at least grad students generate some wickedly intellectual humor. Bet your first-graders didn't do that!
Luigi
I've missed a good word play here - it's late, and I must be tired. You should start a blog for your classmates and gunnery mates called Grad School vs. Grade School.

ContemporaryCaflicCrusader
Wickedly = bad word. :) It is apparent you have not spoken with a New Englander. At least recently. Everything is wicked awesome, or wicked cool, or wicked stupid. It's part of our accent. Prayers for anyone going to school. School is the slaughterhouse of the human soul. Brainwashed and given false purpose sent into the world to wait to burn... Unless they come across a true believer. Then and only then may they change.
