AccountDeleted
I just finished watching Sisters of War and posted this in the Lame Board movie section but thought it might be good here as well. It is about the friendship between an Australian nurse and an Australian nun being held captive by the Japanese at a mission in Papua New Guinea during WW2. It is an Australian Broadcasting Commission film so only available through their ABC shop at http://shop.abc.net.au/products/sisters-of-war or you can watch the whole thing at youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHA0yHYbTa8. The DVD has extra scenes that were cut out of the movie.
Gabriela
Is it good or is it lame? They sure didn't skimp on sexualizing that nurse... :-(
AccountDeleted
Is it good or is it lame? They sure didn't skimp on sexualizing that nurse... :-( I wrote a lovely long response but lost it - sigh. Anyway, I think they glamorized the women but didn't really sexualize them. Women in WW2 wore a lot of red lipstick (my mother did) - at least Australian women did. And the uniform is what they wore. Over time of course no one looked glamorous because they were living in a jungle mission and the Japanese army took over their hospital and mission. Film makers choose very pretty actresses of course. The movie was about the relationship between a secular nurse and a nun - and I liked it for that. The ABC doesn't do graphic violence, and the women were not raped (praise God) but they did endure hardships and starvation and fear. It did show gruesome wounds on the soldiers but it was realistic and necessary I think to the film. Watch the youtube link and if you don't like it - don't watch it! :) I really enjoyed it. But the accent might be a bit difficult to understand for some people, and the slang. I was fascinated by the nun's headpiece, but they didn't wear this all the time, and some of the sisters had different habits so I wondered if there were lay sisters too. This is one movie where the nun didn't leave the convent - see photo of real women below. And here is a link to photos of the movie ... http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/ad52/BEE-wansan/Sisters%20of%20war/SistersOfWar-116.jpg
Gabriela
I just watched this. It really was excellent. Such a tragic and yet uplifting (at the end) story. Thank you for the recommendation, nunsense! For those who want to watch it, the original YT link that nunsense posted is dead. It was closed for copyright infringement. Here's one that works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWmOYAMnLz0&list=PL5ZNHsWEqJSeCcBpaK0OB8LhPytd-tcFe "Who's have thought I'd miss a Protestant?" :-P Edited September 30, 2013 by curiousing
TheLordsSouljah
OH MY GOODNESS I love this movie! I watched it with my friend a few months ago... it shows a completely different side of the war. I think there are one or two parts that I remember being a bit weird, but overall it's a good movie. Recommended. :)
