KenW
Mass, I believe. I don't play in Mass.
Gabriela
One of my pastors is strongly urging me to play hours of Adoration. Kind of a microcosm of what Matt Maher did at WYD. I'm all for it, but I would personally want to keep it quiet, laid back and instrumental. If there was any indication that I was disrupting rather than enhancing, it'd be a no go. I don't play in Mass. Then why would you play at Adoration? Adoration is supposed to be even MORE silent than Mass. There's so little silence in the world, when I go to Adoration and there's noise, I want to cry (and often do). Have mercy on the poor people who live in apartments or with tons of kids or share an office or otherwise can't escape the noisy world anywhere but Adoration! Winchester
I don't play in Mass. Yes. You said in the title that you played solo.

At one time I would agree with you, but at this time it is not a decision I will make without prayer and counsel. My pastor thinks my talent could be beneficial, and who am I to tell the Holy Spirit otherwise if my pastor is right? If I do it, I will insist that it be posted in the bulletin, and the people that do desire silence can simply avoid that time.

I was recently asked to play at adoration (it's a monthly Holy Hour) that is interspersed with silence and music. I play guitar (oooo -- I'm expecting jeers). The only reason why I declined was that I had spiritual direction scheduled for the weekend and the Holy Hour would mean I'd have to get on the road too late. Every parish is different, every community is different, and what works in one community won't work in another. As long as what is being done is respectful it should be ok. And again -- if someone doesn't like the music during Adoration my area has a 24/7 adoration Church that they can go to instead (it is fairly close) during that time. I've been at the Holy Hour and it is tastefully done ... again the goal is not showcasing a musician/singer, but appropriate music to help someone enter into the Heart of Jesus. Lil Red
KenW - welcome to phatmass. First thing you should know is to take Winchester's posts with a grain of salt. or the whole bag of salt. two - i haven't the time to listen to what you posted, hopefully i will soon. three - Adoration should not have all music. Adoration should have times of silence as well. :)
cmaD2006
three - Adoration should not have all music. Adoration should have times of silence as well. :) 100% agree (I realized that I didn't put that in my post). Too much music is annoying (been there ... hate it). And unluckily I'd have to say that this society is so sound-bombarded that some people will have a very hard time sitting in Adoration in sheer silence (I've gotten shocking responses when I say "yeah, I do a yearly 8-day silent retreat, and just got through a 30 day silent retreat"). My opinion -- an appropriate balance of music and silence can help those who aren't used to the silence. And again -- the key is "tasteful". I've been at adorations that go full throttle with "praise songs" that just serve to scrape the soul (imagine fingernails on a chalkboard). Bleh. I stop going to those. Oh and yeah.... Lil Red is spot on about Winchester. Winchester is winchester. :)
Lil Red
thanks for clarifying, cmaria. :) I thought you were saying "no silence"! LOL! I was like, "no! some silence is good! please!" LOL
AugustineA
This is really nice. 3.06 onwards was the perfect resolution. Keep using your ability to worship God! Just don't play when I'm in adoration or I'll be all like Shhhhhhhhh.. :smile3: Edited September 18, 2013 by AugustineA
