Ethiopia: Man smashed religious picture at St. Mary's Orthodox Church in DC - Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1WiFz0OdM2o WASHINGTON -

Police in Washington DC arrested a man after he allegedly smashed a picture of St. Mary at a church in Northwest on Sunday. The man reportedly grabbed a painting from a shelf outside an Ethiopian Orthodox church on Buchanan Street near 14th Street. Ethiopian Orthodox is a Christian religion that is the predominant religion in Ethiopia, NBC Washington says. The man also reportedly said, "Mary has no power over us." Shocked parishioners watched it happen and called the police. The suspect was not a member of the church, according to witnesses

Stuff like this makes me so angry. While it doesn't say if the man was a protestant or a muslim, I'm more inclined to believe it's a disgruntled protestant nitwit. Even muslims adore the Theotokos. Why can't these people just leave us alone and mind their own beaver dam business?

(and OMG the comments on that article)

We have every right to be upset over this. It's sacrilegious desecration. Something I don't get: if the man thinks that “Mary has no power over us," why did he feel the need to smash the icon? Another thing to think about: Protestant icon smashers have something in common with satanists when they desecrate images of the Mother of God.

By the way, I think you meant to say that "even Muslims venerate or honor" the Theotokos.Thought I would offer the clarification, lest a protestant gets confused. :)

Probably. Luther, Zwingli & co. still be causin problems.

"Leave us alone"?

Are you Orthodox now?

I think there's a church somewhat nearby that celebrates the Ge'ez rite once a month and I've always been interested in going.

You honor the Theotokos, do you not? Although it was an Orthodox Church was attacked, the hatred for the Mother of God has been shown to Catholics as well, so it is a problem on both sides that the Protestants give grief. Although technically I am following the Orthodox faith, I'm not officially confirmed, but would like to be soon.

I was extending a friendly hand :)

(though this is why I still have one foot in the Catholic Church and might just become a Melkite, lol.)

I love the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. They're Oriental, so the Christology is different, but their icons and liturgy is wonderful

Yes I agree it was shameful and offensive to me as a liturgical Christian (i.e. not a born again/bible believing/christ-follower/not religious christian). You're just one of a few phorum member whose religious affiliation has changed (iirc), and I'm just nosy/curious :)

She still would not be in communion with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Go to the church! Tell me all about the Ge'ez rite! :D And Take pics if there is an opportunity to do so without being disrespectful.

Orientals are bomb. (Not that I am biased. ;) )  Most Copts and many others will say we are the same aside from the language (and the translation errors back in the day). Exceptions/the biggest proponents of the separation on theological basis that I have met are usually West Euro/American converts.

I LOVE Coptic Christians to death! ^_^ They're the ones who prayed, and still pray, the oldest prayer to the Mother of God: Sub Tuum Praesidium! :D
