ToJesusMyHeart
Daily Mass. This is assuming you had no way to avoid death.
Selah
You mean if a madman came in in the middle of it?
ToJesusMyHeart
Yeah, pretty much. *Applies to Divine Liturgy too
Gabriela
Hmmm... That's a tough one. Cuz I'm not obligated to go to daily Mass, but I am obligated to preserve my life to the best of my ability, right? I think I'd go to a different parish. (If you hadn't made that an option, this would have been much harder. I'd have not gone, but felt really, really bad about it. Now, if it were a Sunday Mass and there were only one parish in town... I think I'd ask a priest what I ought to do. ;-) Edited September 8, 2013 by curiousing
Basilisa Marie
Well, I know there'd be a temptation for me to go just because I wanted to be a martyr, and I don't think that's the kind of spiritual disposition proper for a real martyr to have (i.e. selfish reasons instead of devotional reasons), so I think for me... I'd call the police. :)
ToJesusMyHeart
What if you couldn't call the police?!
Gabriela
What, you mean, cuz the phone lines are down or something? ;-)
ToJesusMyHeart
Yeah, the phone lines are down...and it's a state-wide blackout...and even if you somehow called them, they didn't answer. THEN WHAT?!!
Nihil Obstat
It is a bit of a catch-22, so I do not think I can give a proper answer.

Luigi
If we had some ham, we could have some ham and eggs, if we had some eggs. 'If the madman picked my parish church, and if he picked the same Mass I usually go to, and if his gun actually worked, and if I didn't duck at the right moment, and if ,,, and if... and if... I much prefer reality.
ToJesusMyHeart
Reality is cool and all, but so is using your imagination.
AccountDeleted
There are too many variables and not enough givens in this scenario to even make it a good exercise in imagination. If I didn't go to Mass, would the gunman kill someone else or is it me only? If I knew that by going he would commit murder, then I would be facilitating an occasion of mortal sin, which I could help him avoid by not attending. If, by attending, I could prevent someone else from dying because he would kill me instead, then that 'might' be considered a self-sacrifice -- but really, unless you define ALL the parameters, it doesn't make any sense. Why would someone knowingly go to their death for no good reason?? Suicide is a sin too and that's what this sounds like if you know it and still do it. It has nothing to do with being a martyr. Martyrs die for the faith, not for stupidity.
Lilllabettt
Martyrs die for the faith, not for stupidity pretty much says it all. But also, how horrible if this guy murders me and then goes to hell for it. That's something I would like to avoid - having anyone go to hell because of something they did to me. Nihil Obstat
We should be careful with that though. Many martyrs went to evangelize Islamic areas, knowing full well that they would be killed. The reasonable assumption that you will be killed is not sufficient condition for counting it a suicide.
