Healthy Eating And Other Things

I dont want this to be a redundant topic since we already have the Workout Thread, but I believe there are two aspects to being healthy: exercising and eating right!

I wanted to make this thread to serve as a place to discuss healthy eating tips & tricks as well as your struggles and triumphs!

Making the right choices hasnt been my strong point in the past, but we all have to start somewhere! :)

Besides, trying new things is fun!

To start off, Ill link some recipes Im making today!

Im going to make a crock pot pork chilly!

http://www.laaloosh.com/2013/07/24/crock-pot-pork-chili-recipe/#more-9336

It is very low on fat and carbs with lots of healthy protein from the pork and beans. The serving size is 1.25 cups which is pretty good!

199 calories; 3g fat; 14g carbohydrates; 27g protein; 5g fiber

Im making it for my lunches! I also will accompany it with some low calorie greek a prepared food made from milk curdled by the action of cultures that i LOVE

They are only 80 calories per pack (which is lower than the other greek brands) and I think they taste great! I prefer the vanilla over the fruit ones though.

I had ten swiss rolls today :|  .  I should buy stock in Little Debbie.  The last two are hidden under my bed.

I like to make a big pot roast.  I'm not a super skilled cook so here is my simple method.

I buy one of those big roasts with the strings wrapped around them.  Then I rub it with a little olive oil and brown it up in a frying pan.  After that I put it in a large slow cooker and add a little rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, and a little salt and pepper.  Then I pour in a half cup of beef stock -- and a beer.  I have tried sherry instead of beer but that seemed to give the pot roast a sherry flavor that I didn't care much for.  I don't know why but the beer just seems to give the pot roast more flavor -- sort of like it does with beer battered fish -- without giving the pot roast a beer flavor.

Anyway, then I add potatoes (I love Yukon Gold), onions (I like plenty of onions), a bag of little carrots, and a bag of green beans.  And then I cover it and turn it on low and let it cook for about 8 hours.  The meat is always incredible and the flavor is the best.  I take the slow cooker pot and stick it in the refrigerator and I will eat the pot roast over the next couple of days -- eating it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I always seem to feel great when I eat this.

Mmm! I love the veggie choices! I might have to try that dish. My only concern is that I have a TINY slow cooker. Maybe I can find a small pot roast....

I just wanted to post something I saw today that made me literally laugh out loud.

BECheeseballSBB2013_Title.jpg

Ive seen it posted on my facebook so I clicked on the link the view the ingredients:

http://sugarbeanbakers.blogspot.com/2013/01/buckeye-cheeseball.html?m=1

I scrolled down the page and saw that it uses 1 whole stick of butter for what I assume is a single serving. WHAT

WHAT

WHAT

Not only that but an ENTIRE package of cream cheese.

WHAT

WHAT

LOLOLOL

Oh but wait, they said you can substitute for fat free cream cheese....as if it even matters.

Grams of Fat in each ingredient

  • Butter = 92g
  • Cream Cheese (8oz) = 80g
  • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips = 30g

Thats all I even care to look at.

My arteries have clogged up just by reading the ingredients....

Yesterday had two Swiss rolls so I could take my first two pills with OJ (See a serving of friut!).  Went to Dunkins to get two Vanilla Creme donuts. For lunch I snacked on cookies.  for supper tyson chicken patties or the generic equivalent and tater tots and chocolate milk.  And I know I ran out of Gatorade at some point.  I just can't remember when.

Went to the Chiropractor yesterday.  Sometimes it's what they won't say.  I have been seeing this guys for 14 years he thought my shoulder was severely messed up.  The other arms wrist was bad too.  Stay active he says or you'll use it.  You know how the wolverine has super anti aging powers?  Well I have super aging powers lol.  My chiropractor said I have had prearthistis since I was 15.  Workout today will be interesting.  dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuuun.

I bet if you changed up your diet you mind find some pleasant results!

You might not be getting all the nutrition your body needs! The best place to start is to just write down everything you eat in a day and then look at it in the evening. Do you like what you see? What is missing? Did you have too much of one nutrient? etc

I think its fun to spice things up and try something new! :)

That video reminded me of a poster that used to be in the Student Union at my university, showing the calories in alcohol in reference to food. It's part of the reason I stopped drinking. A pint of cider is like the equivalent of a doughnut!

I am quite a haphazard sort of cook, I tend to improvise a lot. But we're trying to save a bit of money at the moment and eat healthier, which is harder to do at the same time than you'd think! So I'm having to think about what I cook a lot more than I might usually do. It's a fun challenge - what I'm doing at the moment is trying to (as much as possible) only use kind of the store-cupboard basics when I cook. It's doing pretty well so far, it's pretty amazing how tasty you can make things without being complicated or fancy. Complicated or fancy is my default setting. :hehe:
