Nypd Designates Mosques As Terrorism Organizations

Time Magazine just released this article this morning about how the NYPD is now targeting Mosques for spying operations.

The New York Police Department has secretly labeled entire mosques as terrorism organizations, a designation that allows police to use informants to record sermons and spy on imams, often without specific evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

The American Civil Liberties Union and two other groups have sued, saying the Muslim spying programs are unconstitutional and make Muslims afraid to practice their faith without police scrutiny.

Before the NYPD could target mosques as terrorist groups, it had to persuade a federal judge to rewrite rules governing how police can monitor speech protected by the First Amendment.

On the one hand, this just seems like common sense. On the other, didn't the FBI recently label the Catholic Church a "terrorist organization"?

I trust the NYPD about as much as I trust the NSA, that is, not even one little bit. They have a long history of documented abuses which have never been punished.

this is completely unamerican, a huge violation of the first amendment, and just as foolhardy and dangerous as FBI "informant' operations like the kind of garbage that led to Ruby Ridge.

and to be honest, it doesn't really matter if those muslims who are violent (it should go without saying that not all are, of course it doesn't go without saying for some so I'll say it here) are using these mosques or not.  that's the kind of danger we have to pay to live in a free society--every single home or property that we choose not to make available to police spying becomes a potential den to plan sinister terrorist plots.  there are only two options--either make everything fair game from homes to churches to mosques, or admit that some places will always be places where people can plot evil things and abide by the standards of freedom that we cherish to limit the government against spying unless it has probably cause that a crime is being committed.  meaning that you could get a warrant to spy on a mosque, but not just by some general labeling of it as a 'terrorist organization', but by presenting evidence to a judge that shows you have reasonable suspicion and probable cause to suspect that specific people are committing crimes within that mosque.

All this talk of what constitutes someone as a terrorist sounds an awful lot like a Monty Python comedy routine about witches...

No.  Obviously not.
