Luigi
Have you seen this series on YouTube? The Dominican is Nicholas Monco, ordained 11 May 2013. He's using Harry Potter to teach theology. He starts with an analysis of whether the magic in the Potter series is evil. I know there have been similar discussions in other threads. I thought you who were involved in those discussions might be interested in Fr. Monco's analysis and application. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrX_qrm9XYA&list=PL8332F2B1B384C168
Gabriela
I think it's wonderful. He's pretty good. He needs to work on his eye contact and naturalness, but maybe after a few videos he'll have improved. I'm watching the first one and it's quite clever. :-)
Gabriela
BTW: Note the contribution of St. Tom's at Purdue at the very end. ;-)
Basilisa Marie
I used Harry Potter to explain to people how domicile/quasi-domicile/transient rules work in canon law in relation to who is your pastor. :) I liked the first video! It looks like a good series. I like the way he integrates clips and such, and his humor. I think it might be something good for people to watch who don't want to read the series themselves, but are trying to discern if Harry Potter is contrary to the faith. Basilisa Marie
His video on the subtle seductions of Harry Potter is also really good. Starting at 9:09, he really gets into it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL8332F2B1B384C168&v=Flhm2GXOy8Q&feature=player_detailpage#t=
CrossCuT
I really liked this. As someone who is a fan of the story in Harry Potter I often find myself defending its "magical" themes with people who dont fully understand it. I really like how he started the video off by explaining why magic is evil! Then going on to explain the distinction and between Harry Potters world and our own; why Harry Potter does not fit into our normal notions of what magic is or where it comes from. He basically explained in a 12 minute video that "Hey, Harry Potter is fiction ei, isnt like our world." I liked it! If only I were able to be so eloquent! Even before I became a Harry Potter junkie, I watched these videos and was convinced it was safe to read/watch. However, I've tried it on one particular person to try and persuade him that fantasy books in general (But Harry Potter in particular) were not evil, but he seemed so set in his ways that it seemed Jesus himself could have told him they were okay and he wouldn't believe it. Some people just aren't interested in changing their ideas, I guess.
