arfink
We call it peameal bacon in these parts. Yeah, it's basically the same thing, except the Americanized version of Canadian Bacon is not rolled in cornmeal on the outside. And according to wikipedia, the recipe is actually derived from an old English or possibly Welsh recipe. arfink
So I've been pondering ideas for things to design for the shop, and wanted to get people's reactions to a few of them. Here is a list of things I want to try in the new year: - A flat silhouette nativity set, where the various people fit into a frame that can either be put into a window or might have a light inside of it, to light up from the back. - "Rugged" holy cards. Low-cost engravings in a thinner material than my big ones, suitable for decades of use without getting destroyed like paper ones. - Gift tags, like these ones I made today for my mother: - More saint medals! Especially unusual saints. - Fancier high quality art pieces (think like my current big ones), with better finishes, nicer hard woods, and inlay. - Rosary parts (or possibly whole rosaries?), specifically custom "centers" and crucifixes. Of course, I would love to make a reliquary, but I don't have a client for that, nor any relics of my own just yet. :P
Chrysophylax
I suppose that cutting off a piece of your hair to put in a reliquary would be a bit presumptuous. You can have one of mine instead. Bwahahaha!!! :hehe: Edited December 16, 2013 by Chrysophylax
AnneLine
Now, Chryso, you will look funny if ARFink takes all your hair for relics. IF you want to think about a 'relic holder' (because you can't SELL relics.... but you CAN sell relic cases....), third class relics can be had by touching something to a relic - I don't know if it requires a 1st class relic or not... but perhaps your parish knows who is in your parish's altar... or their might be a relic or two at your cathedral or a local monastery or something.... or one or another of us might have a 1st class relic you could use for this purpose.... Like some of your sugestions above -- could you maybe number those so we can give you feedback more easily?
arfink
Well, I can't edit the post now, so this is what you get. ;) 1- A flat silhouette nativity set, where the various people fit into a frame that can either be put into a window or might have a light inside of it, to light up from the back. 2- "Rugged" holy cards. Low-cost engravings in a thinner material than my big ones, suitable for decades of use without getting destroyed like paper ones. 3- Gift tags 4- More saint medals! Especially unusual saints. 5- Fancier high quality art pieces (think like my current big ones), with better finishes, nicer hard woods, and inlay. 6- Rosary parts (or possibly whole rosaries?), specifically custom "centers" and crucifixes. 7- Reliquaries? arfink
Well tonight the laser has apparently failed. I have been running it almost continuously today, and it just stopped working. I honestly don't know what went wrong. The head kept on moving as it ought, but the beam just stopped firing. Out of habit, I opened up the cabinet below the machine where the sump was connected. The water in the sump felt very warm. In panic, i began checking mechanical components for failure. The mirrors are good, the primary lens is intact, and the reflectors for the laser tube also seem intact. The tube has no signs of stress or wear either, and the anode and cathode look fine. I ventured to fire the laser manually in test mode, and the tube did fire at 30 watts (current limited from 40 to preserve life) as it should. Yet under computer control the beam seems to cut off in very predictable places. I shut everything down and am going to let the sump water return to cold overnight, and see what happens tomorrow. I'm hoping this is just a normal thermal protection problem and not a problem in the driver card. I really don't want to have to swap parts on this. A failed tube I can almost afford to replace, but a failed driver card I cannot. Edited December 17, 2013 by arfink

AnneLine
I think you should feed it unsalted Holy Water.
arfink
Well, something is still wrong. The same problem is still happening. I did have one good turn though, I checked my paperwork and found I should still be covered by my 2 year warranty! :bounce: So I sent in a support email to the guys at Full Spectrum, and should hopefully have this mess sorted soon. arfink
What I thought was a 2 year warranty... isn't. Phooey. So I guess I'll be footing the repairs myself. It seems it's something in the power supply perhaps. I did a cursory inspection and found no fuses or anything blown, so I don't know what's up. I'm praying it's not too expensive... AnneLine
oh no! Praying hard....
arfink
Well, repairs aren't going to be that bad. I do have to pay for it all myself, but it's only $300 for the part, plus whatever shipping is, which shouldn't be bad. I will be back up and running before too long.
