How To Identify An American Tourist

CrossCuT

Recommended Posts

So I work with two lovely ladies who happen to have grown up and lived a large chunk of their life in the Netherlands as well as France. We were discussing at lunch today what they felt were the main indicators in identifying an American based primarily by what they wear (but not all are clothing).

1) Baseball caps
2) Jeans
3) Sneakers
4) College/school logo shirts
5) Hoodies
6) Gum chewing
7) Loud!

So if youre ever traveling outside of the US, consider wearing/not wearing these items depending on how easily you want to be spotted. :)

Any other non US residents have some other identifying characteristics that arent on this list?

I was told when I wore a purple outfit during Lent, if you claim to be part of a secular order and are not wearing the colors of your order, they know you are an American....

I always stood out in Mexico because I was a head taller than everyone.

And they'll take my Yankees hat from my cold dead hands.

A few I noticed during my year in Italy:

- wearing brightly colored raincoats for anything other than hiking/outdoor sports

- in general, wearing any sort of athletic wear for anything other than athletics

Basilisa Marie

Talking loudly in English about "MURIKAN!" things: i.e. large guns, hotdogs, talking about paying for things in dollars, etc.

I spent a month in Salzburg for a study abroad trip, and my professor leading the trip gave us a whole list of what to do and not to do in order for us to not be massively conspicuous. Towards the end of the trip, identifying American tourists on the ubiquitous Sound of Music tours got pretty painful.

A friend said that wearing a waist pack made me look clearly like an American tourist. (I said I didn't care right there.)

I was told that wearing white tennis shoes is give away.

Sadly, many Europeans have negative stereotypes of American tourists being loud and obnoxiously commenting that any other way than the American way of doing things is weird.
