Love the Dalek dress.

I would totally dress up as my favorite characters.

Who says that growing up means we can't still be silly and have fun? Lame people, that's who.

On Halloween. At a party maybe. Maybe I get weird about it because I know people who do it in like the street for no apparent event or reason.

How about comic/sci-fi/anime conventions and expos, which is where most of those pictures you are seeing come from?

Comicon in San Diego is an enormous event. And it doesn't even hold a candle to Comiket in Tokyo.

Claire,

I wonder if part of this isn't just that at some point in about your 20's, you start to be able to have fun like a kid again.  I know it didn't kick in with me until about that point...  One of my friends suggested that I join a group from the local university who were going to a Renaissance Pleasure Faire.  At first I was horrified... but we had a lot of fun putting together the costumes, and getting dressed to go.  I know some people go over-the-top and kind of decide to live in their personae... but we were just having fun!

And after the faire, we went out to dinner as a group (there were 8 of us), and we wore our Renaissance costumes.  We selected a small restaurant that served nothing but roast beef... and when we walked into the restaurant, the waiter didn't bat an eyelash, but just did a deep bow and proceeded to seat us at a table near a window.  (I am sure he figured, great free advertising!)  He did insist that the member of our group who had a sword REMOVE it at the table, which was appropriate.  ;)     The management also made a point of having every member of the kitchen staff deliver one dish to the table... so they all had fun serving us.

WE HAD A BLAST!!!!!   (And AnneLine learned WHY upper class people had ladies maids... I couldn't get into or out of that thing by myself!!!!  And I had to watch going through doorways or I got stuck!   It was almost like going to an immersion experience in a different time period!!!!!!

(I've never had the nerve to go to a Star Trek one.... but I loved going to one of the big exhibits when it was in a hotel I was staying in....)

Bottom line... it's just FUN!!!!!!

I love the Renaissance festival! I think some people who attend are a tad strange, but I don't mind the dressing up for that or comic con or whatever.

cosplay has a dark side, does it not.

but overall, I think grown ups don't have enough pure wholesome playtime, and cosplay compensates for that
