Daily Mass

Hey guys. Some of you read the thread where Sojourner and I talked about going to Mass twice last weekend. I was thinking about going to some daily Masses. I was wondering though: is it just the same as Sunday? Do they skip the homily? I mean, I can't see doing a big old homily for three people (I don't really know how many people go, actually).

If there are any differences, I'd appreciate info. Also, if you go/have gone to a daily mass, feel free to comment. I'd like to know all about it, because I'd be going BY MYSELF this time (oo, scary!).

(scary only because I'm not Catholic, and because I only know how to do half the stuff--responses, etc.)

Thanks!

MG

Well, I usually go to Saturday Mass downtown, and in the mornings before school (if I'm not busy doing homework) It's pretty much the same as a normal Mass, except no second reading.

They don't sing any hymns (unless it's a really special feast day), but as the priest is processing in everyone recites an Entrance Antiphon. That's a short little verse, sometimes a Bible quote, that has to do with the readings for the day.

Same first reading and psalm, (psalm is recited, not chanted) and then they usually skip the second reading and go straight to the Gospel. Most priests will chant an Alleluia before reading the Gospel. Short homily, intentions, and then on to the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

The Eucharistic prayer is pretty much the same. Usually right before or right after everyone recieves communion, they'll read a Communion Antiphon (Like the entrance one).

Hope this is what you're looking for! ;) I like daily Mass, it's a lot more personal and calm.

It depends on the Church, our priest always does a homily at daily Mass. Our priest simply can't sing without accompanyment or we would be singing every Mass.
If I go to a daily Mass at our cathedral they sing all the Mass parts and hymns as well.

It's not the same as Sunday Mass. There is only one reading and the Gospel. There is not profession of faith. There doesn't have to be a homily, but there usually is.

Yep, what they said!

The parishes at which I've gone to daily mass usually don't have much singing and usually no accompaniment, and there's usually a very brief homily. Also sometimes the priest is more interactive during a daily mass.

Also, during the intercessory time people can offer up individual prayers.

Unless you go to a particular seminary, in which case it's almost always a feast day or there is a bishop visiting and the homily tends to become a sermon and goes on for thirty minutes...not that I'm complaining...

Yeah, I can't always cut out an hour in the middle of the day, but I try to do it a couple of times a week. There's a parish within easy walking distance of where I work, so that's cool.

The other cool thing is that this parish offers daily confession right before daily Mass, which is great. Every time I've gone, there is a line for confession, sometimes up to 10 people.

I tried to go to daily Mass on Monday, but it was in a different area of the church and I couldn't find it.

This fall when I go back to school, I'm going to attempt to work my work schedules around daily Mass, Adoration, or both. Hopefully, I should be able to find it then!

Yeah, daily mass is basically the same as Sunday mass, except for the second reading and such. We actually get quite a few people at our Wednesday mass, all regulars. That's another thing, if you go to daily mass often enough, you really connect with the other "regulars". At our former parish we had quite a close-knit group for daily mass. It's neat ^_^

I haven't been to daily mass (except Monday... I guess...)

but I am thinking of encorporating Friday mass into our school schedule for next year. Our parish has a school and they do the daily mass during school hours for the children (and anyone else who walks in). I thought that would be cool for my kids.

We always have a homily. We don't sing any hymns though or have the second reading so the mass is shorter than the Sunday mass. The Rosary is prayed together in my church before the mass every week day morning too so when I can I try to get there early enough to pray it. There is usually around 40 or so people at the weekday mass in my parish.

MG, don't worry about not knowing all the responses! It takes time to learn them and honestly the most important thing is that you are there celebrating the mass! First time I went to the weekday mass I didn't realise it would be different so I was using the mass sheet for the Sunday mass and got into a complete muddle until I stopped worrying and let the Lord's presence and peace wash over me.

If I could I'd go to mass every morning but it's not always possible with work commitments. :( It's the most amazing thing to be able to start your day with this gift - it always puts the mania of work into perspective.

I love daily mass because it's like a short, power packed, condensed version of any other mass.

I strongly recommend getting a daily missal, or subscribing to "Magnificat", as it'll help you follow along so you won't feel like you're not participating.

Daily mass is like coffee. You can get through the day without it, but when you have it, it makes the day oh so much better.

There are probably some that say (and may be right in their accord) that they cant get through the day without the Daily Mass... just a thought :)
