A snowless winter left our small crabapple tree thirsting for much-needed moisture, but the rich evergreen branches we had cut to decorate our monastic home for Christmas still filled the air with the freshness of their fragrance as we celebrated our loved Mother Abbess’ ruby anniversary of entrance on JANUARY 8. While we were still delighting in the thought of God’s manifold blessings showered upon her (and us, her grateful daughters) throughout forty years spent joyfully hidden under God’s gaze, a most fitting anniversary gift was given to the entire community. On January 13, Postulant Emma took the same step Mother Abbess had taken forty years earlier, over the same threshold, into the same small passageway known as Aula Regis, “The Hall of the King.” Escorting our new postulant to choir where she could greet our King for the first time from this side of the grille, we rejoiced that God’s call continues to be heard by young women who gladly spurn all the “options” held out to them by the world in favor of a privileged position “beneath a leaf” — set apart in a special way to delight the heart of God.
