This is a RIOT. Thank you so much for posting it! I've sent it to the Catholic campus ministers at Purdue. Hope they do something with it!

Should I be concerned that my priest announced that the Assumption ISN'T a Holy Day of Obligation? :/

If it were me, I'd send him an email asking him to clarify.

In the US, it's not an obligation if it falls on a Saturday or Monday, so maybe he wasn't being clear.  Even if it didn't seem like it, I'd give him the opportunity to clarify what he meant.  If he still says that the Assumption isn't ever a holy day of obligation, THEN be concerned.

Do Holy Days of Obligation vary by diocese? I thought it was only by country.

In the US the Assumption is celebrated in every diocese. However the Ascension is only a HDO in six dioceses.

But beyond that, it does vary quite a bit country to country, which is why it will be helpful to know which diocese you currently live in. I would rather be more specific than country.

I wish that priests would remind people of upcoming Holy Days of Obligation. Sure, we should know better, but reminding sure as heck helps drive the message home.

Our parish priest complained that there should only be one holy day mass since not that many people show up to the second one. He claims that "nobody" comes to the second one. I know that I'm terrible at math, but I thought that between 50 and 100 is more than zero. I understand that he's frustrated that there are still those who don't show up on holidays ever, but sheesh.

By the way, is there a particular amount of people that are necessary for a priest to say mass? Like in situations where a missionary priest is barely getting converts or no one at all.

No. A priest can say a Mass with no one else in attendance, and it would still be valid and (as far as I know) licit.

I'm in the U.S., currently living in the South. :)

Not an obligation in Canada, for any of us scrupulous Canucks who were worried.

I wasn't even the slightest bit aware that it wasn't a day of obligation in Canada

Well I suppose it is a bit of a relief to hear that since I unfortunately didn't make it to Mass yesterday :(

I love the chart at the top of this page.  :)

As far as the Holy Days in the US, in particular States, Dioceses, etc., on 2nd page of this thread, check this out:

http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/topic/130763-0815-holy-day-of-obligation/?p=2616115

I appreciate that some bishops want to make life easier for their flock  (or perhaps want to spur them to greater holiness!), but SHEESH, do they realize that it is very confusing for us to have this vary from place to place?

I would be much happier if they would just set a list from Rome and tell us, "This is the way it is.  You can get a dispensation from your pastor if you can't get there, if you have a valid reason."

AND..  I am SO SICK of parishes (including my own) deciding to run ONE MASS on holidays like January 1 (and civic holidays).

It might work well for them, but they LIVE THERE.   I live a distance away, and often my husband is working... and he is the one with the car.

To get there by pubic transit can take me 2-3 hours on a holiday.   I'm more than willing to do that for God... but it would be nice to have a few times to choose from.  :end rant:

It is also immensely frustrating to be traveling, and find out that a Holy Day in one State or location is different from one in another State or location.   And that what you THOUGHT was in effect, now is DIFFERENT.   Grrrrr.

I think if they set up the schedule and offered the masses at times people can get there... people would come.

A 9AM during the work day... probably not so many.... because people are at work.  But select a time at night that people can get there--  5:30 or 6:00 or 7:00 or even later.... you might get a decent number of people.

Or so it seems to be in our parish when it is done....  They actually get a full church for the 1st Friday evening 6:30 mass.  Imagine!

I'm lucky ... I have Mass choices at 7am, 8am, 9am, 12 noon, 5:15pm, 6:30pm, 7pm and even sometimes (if there is a Vietamese Mass on a holy Day) a 8pm Mass.

But ... On the 15th I had a serious problem at work, and I got stuck working with a coworker on a serious issue.  So -- I left work at 8pm.  The good news -- I did make the Vigil Mass the day before!
