Ice_nine
Didn't know the Ascension is only an obligation for a handful of states. That's weird.
Spem in alium
Here we only have two obligatory days besides Sundays - Christmas Day and the Assumption. Been spamming all my Aussie Catholic friends so they too will not be able to say they forgot. Edited August 15, 2013 by Spem in alium
Not The Philosopher
Not an obligation in Canada, for any of us scrupulous Canucks who were worried. Huh?
cmaD2006
Didn't know the Ascension is only an obligation for a handful of states. That's weird. Only a handful of states in the US keep the Ascension as Thursday one week before Pentecost. All others move it to the Sunday prior to Pentecost. So ... Ascension is STILL technically a Holy Day of Obligation (i.e. if you move it to Sunday it is by default a Holy Day of Obligation). Just that in most dioceses in the US it is moved to Sunday (instead of leaving it on Thursday). In those states where Ascension is moved, that particular Thursday is handled as a normal Thursday of whatever week it is in Easter (sorry I don't know that off the top of my head). It is no longer Ascension. Hope this helps,
truthfinder
Huh? Not quite sure what the confusion is but Canuck=Canadian (and in this instance not the hockey team).
AnneLine
Part of me just kind of wishes they would just choose one option and keep it. Whichever option. But I also realize that, wonderful as it would be to HAVE all the Holy Days (and it WOULD be my preference!) part of the problem literally is a function of the priest shortage. It isn't about the lay people not being willing to come... it's about the priests not being able to multiply themselves far enough. When I first joined my Secular Order community, it was an unwritten presumption that ALL of us would go to Mass EVERY day. It wasn't legislated... it was just... a given. 40 years later (shiver) they have reiterated to us that it NEVER was a mandatory requirement, unlike the LOTH or the mental prayer... because they can't legislate it for everyone because so many of us have such limited Mass options these days. I know in the parish I was in 30 years ago, we had at least 5 masses a day. Now they have 1. And we are LUCKY if there is a mass we can get to even on a mandatory Holy Day because of the time 'It' is offered. Yes they do add an extra evening mass in most parishes... EITHER on the night before or the night of. And if someone has a commitment that night.. (such as work... or school....) oh well. And... this is a sobering reality as well... I have heard the statistic that there is one U.S. state where there are only 7 priests in the entire STATE. And I know of one California county where there is only one priest... and that is in an area that includes part of the Sierra Nevada mountains, so lots of it is INACCESSIBLE large chunks of the year. So.. yeah. I get the reduced Holy Day requirement. But Lordy I miss getting to Mass more often than Sundays.....
Eowyn
I went last night to the vigil mass. I'm very blessed in that there are at least 8 churches within an easy driving distance. They usually have a varied mass schedule so it's easy to get there.
