Era Might
I believe in this. I don't think it's necessarily an extraordinary thing, more like a perceptive insight or spiritual lucidity...probably rooted in natural gifts (like any charism). Anselm
Hmm, when I googled 'soul reading' it came up with pages and pages about 'mediums' and 'clairvoyants' - even tarot cards!
Era Might
Hmm, when I googled 'soul reading' it came up with pages and pages about 'mediums' and 'clairvoyants' - even tarot cards! This is true of any religious phenomenon, there will always be people who claim to provide a "spiritual technology" like conjuring the dead. That doesn't discount real spiritual charisms. Nihil Obstat
What are the thoughts about people with this ability who are nonchristian? Is it possible that they're also inspired by the Holy Spirit? I would not rule that out. Truth only leads one way: to the Church.
Era Might
No, but what proof is there of its veracity? Do you mean what proof that this is a legitimate charism, or what proof that a person actually has the charism? I think there's pretty abundant proof, or tradition rather, in Christianity for this kind of charism. Whether a person actually possesses it requires the same test as any other charism: by their fruits you will know them.

Era Might
Both Well as I said about the second one, by their fruits you will know them. As for the first one, spiritual direction and saintly wisdom go back a long way in Christianity. You can go back to all the way back to the Book of Acts to "soul reading": But a man named Anani'as with his wife Sapphi'ra sold a piece of property, and with his wife's knowledge he kept back some of the proceeds, and brought only a part and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, "Anani'as, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God." When Anani'as heard these words, he fell down and died. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. --Acts 5:1-
Anselm
Spiritual direction is a very different thing. Most of what has been described as 'soul reading' sounds like simply intelligent, experienced and insightful confessors.
Era Might
Spiritual direction is a very different thing. Most of what has been described as 'soul reading' sounds like simply intelligent, experienced and insightful confessors. Yes, charisms do not have to take extraordinary forms. And they are rooted in natural gifts. But if it is a charism, then it is different than being "intelligent, experienced, and insightful." These are human qualities, which can be useful, but when someone has a special charism, it deepens these things and they take on a spiritual dimension, not merely human. Era Might
Another way of saying "soul reading" is discernment.
Era Might
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. --1Corinthians 12:7-
