CatholicsAreKewl
Has anyone had this done to them? I met a Catholic who claims to have this gift. There's also a somewhat famous Buddhist monk in my city that ostensibly does this. Edited August 14, 2013 by CatholicsAreKewl

Basilisa Marie
Yes! A friend of mine has the gift. It's freaky stuff. But also super helpful, because when he does it, it gives me insight into issues I might be having or a different way to look at things. Usually it's not anything like, "I know what sins you're committing!" but more like, "You should really meditate on the parable of the rich young man, I think that would really help you out." At least when he's done it to me. Others have had different experiences. But seriously, he's the most orthodox Catholic I have ever met. He also happens to be charismatic. He usually doesn't advertise that he has this gift, but it's common knowledge among his friends.

arfink
Monsignor Essef. Yep. Went on a retreat with him. He could do it in the confessional like St. John Vianney. :P Scared the jibblies out of me.
Anselm
But seriously, he's the most orthodox Catholic I have ever met. He doesn't sound like it. It all seems a little dubious to me.

Basilisa Marie
He doesn't sound like it. It all seems a little dubious to me. If you actually knew him, you'd understand what I mean. His theology is orthodox. He loves the EF. The Rosary is a fun activity to do with friends when you're just hanging out. He knows all kinds of priests and bishops. Everything you'd associate with being an orthodox Catholic, he is. Soul reading is one of many gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit. Plenty of saints had that gift, and other kinds of supernatural gifts.

arfink
Yep, those kinds of charisms are real and people are still given them by the Holy Spirit, along with many others. It is my own personal experience that it can be very easy to bury these gifts with the pretense they they are weird, and growing up as a child I was basically trained to do that. CatholicsAreKewl
What are the thoughts about people with this ability who are nonchristian? Is it possible that they're also inspired by the Holy Spirit?
morostheos
I know someone who has what he calls the gift of prophecy, which I think is similar. He is also part of the charismatic movement. When I went to a prayer session where he did this, it wasn't a telling of your future but more recommendations for your soul, things to focus on or not focus on. For me they have proved to be very poignant.
