Deleting Members And Posts...

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to decrease the size of our database so need to delete members and posts. There are a ton of awesome posts over 10 years of talking here on the phorum, so obviously I want to limit it to stuff that's not important. Here's what I'm thinking.

Any thread that is over 5 years old that has less than 20 replies.

Any thread over 1 year old that has less than 5 replies.

And for the Lame Board, any thread over 1 year old that has less than 20 replies.

And for members...

Any member that has been inactive for more than a year that has less than 5 posts.

Any member that has been inactive for more than 5 years that has less than 20 posts.

Thoughts?

All my posts (with the exception of this one) are gems and should be kept.   :saint2:

Why not just delete all the lame board posts that are more than 6 months or a year old.

Because there are long threads in the Lame Board that mean something to people.

I am sure that they do, but they are still lame. Isn't it better to keep posts that promote and defend the Catholic faith?

Postscript: In an ideal world I would say keep everything that has ever been posted on Phatmass. The forum has a long history, and it is sad to see any of it lost, but if it costs too much to maintain, such is life I suppose.

I agree. My hope is that any thread that did not generate more than 20 replies was not "memorable".

The thread started by Cmom about my mother's death last August only generated 14 posts, but to me it is a very memorable thread.

It is nice that I can bring it up and read the kind words and condolences. I looked it up just yesterday, which was the first anniversary of my mother's passing away.

Postscript: I know, based upon the OP, that the less than twenty post thing is for older threads, but what if my mom's thread had been older, it would just be erased. Sad to think about, but I do understand that the forum has gotten too large, and so sacrifices must be made.

Hey, dUSt,

I see what you are saying, and what you propose does make a lot of sense.

Couple of thoughts...

There are a lot of people who made accounts and still actively lurk.  They may or may not read stuff on the Open Mic thread.  (This probably applies to a lot of VSers, for example.  [whether or not this is good or bad, it is a reality]).

Sometimes people come back to Phatmass after being away.... and it would be very upsetting to some to find themselves deleted.   Could be especially true for some who were in seminary, religious life, etc. without ability to post during a year or two period.  True of most novices and I don't know about seminarians.  However, most of those probably have 20 posts or more, but I know of at least one with fewer....

Could you post your suggestion/decision in all of the forums with a little bit of warning? (is there a way to do a system general announcement?)   And would there be a way people could let you know if there is someone who should be kept in the database?

Because... that would give people the opportunity to put in some prayer requests or some such to keep their accounts active.....

I agree with Apotheon; Some of the lameboard threads are of value to people.   (I'll say a prayer for your Mom, Apotheon!  Happy memory!)

For the future, it will be easy for us to remember that we need to hit minimum of 20 posts to be retained (especially if a general announcement gets made per above).  Or maybe some kind of a 'memorable threads' section?

In the meantime, can we bump threads we want to have kept alive?    Or are some of those archived and unable to be bumped?  If so, can the stuff be cut & pasted into a new thread?   Trying to solve your problem AND be respectful here....

Thanks again for all the work you are doing.  Special prayers!

The debate table could use some bumped threads from the glory days of Phatmass. The present situation there is pretty bad (bordering on lame).

Exactly what I am thinking.  It always gets a little dead during summer and holidays... if we all had a bit of warning, we could bump some good stuff on a lot of threads while still achieving what dust wants -- clearing out the attic!!!

And here's an extra taco, dUSt, for asking our opinions.... :paco2:

Thank you for the prayers. My mother had a deep love of the Theotokos, the Joy of All Who Sorrow, and prayed her Akathist every Friday afternoon. Here is a link to that particular service:
