I Believe 'cause It's Absurd?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently having a debate with a bunch of atheists, and I'm trying to present the side that believing in God is not illogical, and that the belief in God is more logical than atheism. To my surprise, a Christian poster said that Christianity isn't logical. How would you refute this? (Of course, I know that religion, and even science, require faith, but that's besides the point. I still hold that believing in God is more logical than atheism.) Have any of you got biblical quotes and logical arguments to prove that belief in God (and adherence to Christianity) needn't be based on blind faith?

God bless,

Jennifer

Well I think in order to refute these accusations that Christianity isn't logical, you first need to get these people to define what exactly isn't logical regarding Christianity/God. It's all very well for people to make such claims but in my experience, these claims haven't been thoroughly thought through which makes them easy to refute.

My conversion began when I thoroughly thought through my existence, where it came from, what it was all about and where it was going. This led me to read more about spirituality, and not necessarily Christianity. In the end I came to the conclusion that I couldn't deny that there was a God which lead me to the second phase in my search for meaning.

I looked into all the major religions and in the end only Christianity seemed to be logical and historically accurate. This led me to the third phase where I went through a few Christian denominations. In the end I couldn't deny that the Church in which I was originally Baptised into (the Catholic Church) was actually THE CHURCH and as much as I didn't want to accept it, I couldn't lie to myself any longer, just like I couldn't deny that there was a God.

I still find myself pausing and trying to grasp the truth in Catholicism in total awe. When I come across writings of the Church Fathers I hear myself saying “My God, it’s true!” This happened all throughout reading “The Lambs Supper” by Scott Hahn.

Anyone else?

As a matter of fact, you can read the thread here, which is taking place at an atheist's forum. You have to sign up if you want to post, though.

God bless,

Jennifer

What the Christian poster may be getting at BeenaBobba, is that Christianity ain't logical, but alogical, meaning it is beyond logic.

That would make sense, Phazzan. I'll bring that up next time to see what he says. The fact still remains, though, that Christianity, and the belief in God in general, is more logical than atheism. That's what I'm trying to prove, anyway.

God bless,

Warning: They use profanity a lot over at that forum, so viewer discretion is advised. Of course, I go over there only 'cause I'm doing apologetics work.

God bless,

Jen

Thy Geekdom Come

We always need apologetics on the Catholicism board at Bolt.com...I won't do apologetics anymore, but there are only a few there...

Deeds (from PM...she's Fabuleuse over there) is doing a good job on the pro-life bit and as she used to be pro-choice, she knows all the arguments, so it's good, but we need more biblical scholars and apologists...

I admire anyone who has the courage and commitment to continue on with apologetics. I always end up feeling like I need to know more and that I don't know enough. I also tend to get very dis-heartened after a while. I suppose it's a matter of perseverance.

Thanks, also, for praying for me. That means a lot to me. (And your apologetic skills are pretty good! :D)

God bless,

Jen

Maybe I'll go there sometime. I've got my hands full at the moment. I'll definitely look into it for the future, though.

Hi yiannii,

I was like that, too, when I first started trying my hand at apologetics. But the good thing about it is that it's made me learn more about Catholicism. I think that you could do apologetics. If there was something you didn't understand or know the answer to, you'd just have to look it up and get back to your opponent with an answer. In the meantime, you'd learn more about Catholicism. :)

Jennifer

The hard thing is you KNOW there is an answer, you know it makes sense too, but you don;t have it or know right that moment, makling the other person go "Yeah, whatever, I knew you Catholics were brainwashed..."

I am learning though, I have a good memory and am very curious, I ask questions, get answers and explanations and store them in my head, when I hear something i just remember it and slowly I see that I am getting better at answering people's questions, lol :D

Yeah you're probably right, apologetics can be very fun, especially if you like debating.... :D
