An Emergency

So, as many of you know (Or have forgotten and are about to be reminded of the fact), my sister is pregnant. Which is great news. However, before she was even pregnant, she informed me one of my jobs as an uncle when she one day has a child will be to change diapers when I'm around (Which I'm more than happy to do; she is after all going to be very busy and exhausted a lot). However, I do not know how to change diapers. In fact, despite my absolute love for babies (It's pretty serious. I pretty much jump up and down and squee at the adorableness of a baby whenever one is near me), I have never even held a baby before (Something Emily and I have decided I should save for Benedict when he is born). Could some of you fine ladies (And gentl-er... rather gruff men) of Phatmass help me out?

Well for starters... changing diapers is not uncles job, so somehow your sister suckered you into it before you realized this!

It's pretty cake though. For girls poopy diapers just make sure you wipe from front to back to prevent infection.

Or... have your sister show you how she wants it done.

It has been long-established by people that know us that I adore my sister and would gladly walk off a cliff for her, so it didn't take any persuasion by her.

Step 1. Figure out which side of the diaper is the front. That sounds stupid, but that's what took me the longest.

I have three little sisters who I changed diapers for from when I was age 7 and up and still going strong. ;)

If you wipe the inside thigh with a cold, wet wipe before taking off the diaper, that will often cause the baby to go ahead and pee so you don't get sprayed (and don't be fooled - girls can do this, too). Also comes in handy if trying to learn your child's cues when doing ec.

Begin now practicing holding your breath. I have nine younger brothers and sisters, so I have a lot of experience with this. It never ceases to amaze me how such horrible smells can come out of such cute littel bodies.

I didn't even have to learn how to change a diaper...I just did.

True story. Don't even know how exactly it happened. I just knew how to change a diaper. Maybe it's a woman thing. But it's not as hard as you think it is. And when in doubt

ask your sister to show you how.

I'll likely just call Emily in a panicked voice and have her coach me through it. It'll be a fun story to share to our college friends one day.
