ChristinaTherese
I have my internet back! A few things, and then a book review. 1) I had a dream last night that I had some problem with my tongue, and so I thought it was cut off. Then I found out that I still had all of it, but it was cut in half in such a way that the top and bottom were severed from each other and I could only move the top half. I was fine with having problems talking, and could get by with signs and slightly coherent speech and writing. The only thing I thought of as a problem was that I was unable to receive the Eucharist as usual, meaning that I could only receive the cup/Precious Blood/whatever-you-call-it-when-you-want-to-differentiate (I'm a neophyte and don't know). After a bit, I woke up and the first thing I did was move my tongue around to make sure I still had it. 2) I sometimes write poems... I don't know... I was thinking of putting one here but now I'm not entirely sure I want to. Maybe. Maybe not. I'd have to choose carefully, since so many are so personal. 3) Book review time. I read A Mango-Shaped Space last week. It was a good book in general, and I found some of it (visualization of the year that I thought was normal and might not be, for instance) edifying. On the other hand, there were some not so good things. Things I wasn't sure about or didn't like somehow: a) I guess I shouldn't rant about theology. Moving on.... b) The acupuncture bit was strange. I just don't think that anyone, synesthete or not, can really see pheromones. It doesn't make any sense. I mean, I could be wrong, but you'd have to show me solid science before I would accept it. c) Once, the name Mia is described as giving an image that does not include the color yellow at all, even though the letter a is apparently yellow to the main character. That could just be because it's the third letter and doesn't give too much bearing to the name or because the author wasn't thinking. At any rate, it's only a minor detail. d) No words are described the way I perceive them, as strings of letters with their own individual colors that meld together to create words. They're all picture descriptions, like "mint green with a wavy light blue line through the middle" (that's neither a quote from the book nor remotely close to my perception of any word I can think of). e) I could probably come up with more, but I'm going to stop now. Good things: a) Music! b) I really liked the story line, excepting a few questions about morality. (I don't want perfect characters, I just want characters who realize what's wrong. In other words, characters who have a decently formed conscience.) c) How she explored her synesthesia when she found out what it was was good, although I would expect that if someone really tried everything they found online a lot of it wouldn't work for them. d) I liked how Billy fit into the story. (I'm not saying more, because I don't want to give things away about the story in case anyone reads it.) e) Again, I guess I could keep going. But in general, the story was well done. My only other comment is just that it seems like her synesthesia is exceptionally strong, and I know that I don't have it nearly that strong. It's mostly just words and numbers, which might be why I often like sung music better than instrumental. (Although I'm both an instrumentalist and a singer.) I think that's how it is for most people, although the particular area of their synesthesia may vary. 4) Just a random memory: Back when I was a little kid, I used to ask a lot of questions like: "What would the pure color red taste, smell, and feel like? What if you could walk through the color red?" Nobody seemed to understand me. And synesthesia was just beginning to be researched, so I doubt that even psychologists would have necessarily understood. I guess I never asked another synesthete.... cartermia
I can lightly see colors when I play the piano. I have recently been playing Flight of the Eagle by Melody Bober (I highly suggest getting it and playing it, great song) and I see a lot of greens and yellows. I don't know if it is just my imagination see the depth of tree leaves (sycamore especially). When I play A Song for You by Melody Bober (I really like her music) then I see soft reds and pinks, not to vibrant. Oh, and I loved a Mango-Shaped Space. I read it during the school year because my English teacher told me to. Got to get off... +TJTM

ChristinaTherese
Well, I wrote to the ASA. We'll see if they get back with anything of interest.... I hope they do! And... maybe... it would be really cool if there was a researcher that I could get to know who would be interested in my questions... and it would be the coolest summer job ever if I could work on research of that myself... and I'm totally dreaming and that is very likely to never happen to me but it would be very cool. I didn't mention that crazy idea at all in my email either, I left my request for information as just that, a simple request for information. I just got a reply from them! One of our conference presenters discussed the colors of letters as they occur in three languages: English, Spanish, German. Her name is Laura Herman. With your permission I'd like to forward your email to her. Of course I said yes. We'll see what happens next!

ChristinaTherese
I haven't had a reply yet.... We'll see if I ever get one. In the meantime, I was just going back through pictures where one of my friends was tagged, and found this picture of the very first hand of one game of Apples to Apples: That was a fun day....
