Actually, I think the new British heir to the throne is named after... the Pope.    Jorge=George.     ;)

You're getting rather annoyed, aren't you? There's no need to be rude just because I pointed out how stupid GWB is.

Not at all, I'm having fun. My life doesn't revolve around George W. Bush (or any president of the United States for that matter). I don't read up on Bush's family to see what babies are being born, and whether his kids and grandkids are dropping their draws in Las Vegas. That's for the British to do with their royal family (if you can actually call it a family . . . it seems more like a business to me).

I should add that . . . I come to Phatmass to have fun, and that is all. After all, there haven't been any serious debates at the phorum in four or five years (e.g., look at the comical "debate" on Catholic virgins in the Debate Table). It is rare that anything serious happens at Phatmass these days.

Oh you're right, I can't possibly leave the house in the morning without checking the Court Circular in the Times.

The British monarchs haven't had any real power since Victoria. Although they (the future kings or queens) could try to exercise their old powers because the unwritten constitution of the UK would not prevent that. Nevertheless, as I already said, if a British King (or Queen) tried to exercise real power today, the monarchy would come to an end at that very moment. But that begs the question, why have a powerless monarch at all? The British monarchy is nothing more than a tourist attraction. People in the US (and other countries) like to visit the Magic Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where they see people dressed up in funny costumes and can gossip about the royals who have no real jobs or responsibilities.

I don't think being a figurehead necessarily means the monarchy should be abolished. It's a deep part of English culture and history. And they can do much useful stuff...I doubt they are twiddling their thumbs all day.

I might agree if it were at least Catholic, but it is not. I was into it when I was an Anglican, but like many of the other things that interested me as an Anglican it has become utterly irrelevant to me. I doubt there will even be an Anglican Church in a generation or two.

It hasn't been Catholic for centuries...I don't think that has anything to do with whether it should exist or not.

And I disagree. If it were at least a Catholic monarchy it would be supportive of the true faith. But it is a heretical monarchy and so I would not be sorry to see it go.

lol the government isn't going to be Catholic with or without the monarchy, and even heretics need government.

Again, we don't agree on things Catholic. Perhaps that is why I am a Catholic and you are not.
