Apotheoun
G.W. Bush, a lot to live up to? If he wants to be a war-mongering half-wit, yes. A lot of British monarchs have been warmongering half-wits.

Apotheoun
Yes, hundreds of years ago, but we didn't elect them. You also kept them (on average) a lot longer than 8 years (e.g., George III). I prefer a republic to a monarchy any day.

Apotheoun
George III wasn't a war-mongering half-wit. In your opinion. That said, what makes the new Prince George qualified to rule anyone? Just that he was born in a rather inbred German family that has ruled Britain for a couple centuries.
Anselm
We manage very well. I simply can't see why GWB was elected once, let alone twice.
Apotheoun
We manage very well. I simply can't see why GWB was elected once, let alone twice. All you have to do is look at who he was running against. At least he didn't contract syphilis, killed several wives, and create his own Church. That kind of insanity can only be done by a megalomaniac king. Anselm
I'd be the last to defend Henry VIII but you appear to be clutching at straws if you think that the two figures are comparable.

No human beings can be compared in an absolute manner, but England has had plenty of bad monarchs. Has America had bad presidents? Yes, but again our system limits their length of rule and in doing so frees us from the corruption of a hereditary monarchy. Now, England isn't really a true monarchy any more, because its monarchs are impotent, and if they ever tried to exercise real power . . . on that day the British monarchy would end. Apotheoun
Quite frankly I would take George W. Bush as a president again over George III, Elizabeth I, Henry VIII, or any number of other British monarchs.

Therefore your previous argument fails; you mention the failings of past monarchs but then point out that they no longer have any real power. The USA twice, in recent years, elected an idiot and gave him huge power. I honestly had no idea that there was any contention over the idea that George W Bush is a bit thick. :p

Although they (the future kings or queens) could try to exercise their old powers because the unwritten constitution of the UK would not prevent that. Nevertheless, as I already said, if a British King (or Queen) tried to exercise real power today, the monarchy would come to an end at that very moment. But that begs the question, why have a powerless monarch at all? The British monarchy is nothing more than a tourist attraction. People in the US (and other countries) like to visit the Magic Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where they see people dressed up in funny costumes and can gossip about the royals who have no real jobs or responsibilities.
