AnneLine
8/7 Today's Journey: Astorga to El Acebo (via La Cruz de Ferro) ..............37.2 KM Astorga................................................ Santa Catalina de Somoza ................. 9.0 KM Rabanal del Camino ........................... 11.0 KM Foncebadon......................................... 5.8 KM La Cruz de Ferro ................................. (between) Manjarin .............................................. 4.3 KM El Acebo de San Miguel ..................... 7.1 KM Comment from AnneLine: Today along our journey we will stop at a spot that is not marked on the map. It is a point on the Camino that Nunsense mentioned in her post a few pages back on this thread, La Cruz de Ferro. It is a place where pilgrims stop to leave a small stone as a marker that they have passed by on the way to Santiago. You might remember we picked up a small stone to carry with us at the start of our journey, we read this blog post which refers to the custom.... http://pilgrimsisters.wordpress.com/2013/06/03/from-sue/ Here is a blog that discusses it further : http://www.caminoways.com/blog/2012/02/11/cruz-de-ferro/ La Cruz de Ferro La Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross) is a cross on the Camino de Santiago and is located between the towns of Foncebadón and ManjarÃn on Section 6 of the French Way.... http://www.caminoways.com/blog/2012/02/11/cruz-de-ferro/ And here is the comment from the Pilgrim who was making the Way in honor of her sister regarding her stop at the La Cruz de Ferro.... "I was eager to get to the cross. This is a significant part of my pilgrimage, it is where I lay down all that burdens me and seek forgiveness. It is where thousands of pilgrims have asked God to recognize the efforts of their pilgrimage and the seriousness in which they make the journey. As I arrive a pilgrim leaves. I am alone and kneel at the cross in prayer. It is incredibly emotional. I realize i am crying as I place the pilgrim pebble Micky gave me. I look up and the sun is risen, the sky a burning gold. I am upset yet peaceful. A powerful moment. Alone but not lonely....." http://pilgrimsisters.wordpress.com/2013/06/06/some-catching-up-to-do-here-is-yesterdays/ Today it would be a good opportunity for all of us to spend some time in prayer at the foot of the cross, laying down any burdens, spiritual or temporal, that we carry at His Feet. At the end of the prayer period, please leave your pilgrim stone in front of a crucifix, bible, or other prayer space. Entrust it and your journey this day to the Lord. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And now we return to our usual pilgrimage journey.... and we have a long day ahead of us, so we had best get started! We are going to follow three blogs, that will give us different views of the Camino... each follows a slightly different schedule, but are approximately in the places we are visiting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Randall St. Germaine: Camino My Way "After the death of my mother in February 2010, I felt I needed to get away, and clear my mind. I chose to walk the famous pilgrimage, the Camino de Santiago, across the north of Spain, despite knowing little about it." After reading the accounts of Randall's struggle through rain, snow and cold, one wonders if it would be tougher to do the Camino in the spring or in the summer.... We have missed some of this pilgrim's stories, but I was struck how similar his story is to those that Nunsense shared with us on her part of the Camino: Remember... (This is actually where we are in our virtual Camino, so this pair of videos gets us caught up very nicely!) NOTE: You will notice that both the Storks and the Lavender flowers figure in both blogs and videos during the next sections of the Camino. The Storks are a traditional good-fortune bird in Spain, and I gather from reading a number of blogs and books, after miles of rain and/or sun, seeing the large areas of lavender is simply balm to the tired pilgrims' souls. The last part of the video shows the beautiful Spanish vineyards and farmlands.... soon we will be in Galicia!!! It seems very appropriate that the film maker chose to use St. Francis' Canticle of the Creatures as the background music. Here is a very nice translation: The Canticle of the Sun by Francis of Assisi Most high, all powerful, all good Lord! All praise is yours, all glory, all honor, and all blessing. To you, alone, Most High, do they belong. No mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name. Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and you give light through him. And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness. Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens you have made them, precious and beautiful. Be praised, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air, and clouds and storms, and all the weather, through which you give your creatures sustenance. Be praised, My Lord, through Sister Water; she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure. Be praised, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you brighten the night. He is beautiful and cheerful, and powerful and strong. Be praised, my Lord, through our sister Mother Earth, who feeds us and rules us, and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs. Be praised, my Lord, through those who forgive for love of you; through those who endure sickness and trial. Happy those who endure in peace, for by you, Most High, they will be crowned. Be praised, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whose embrace no living person can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those she finds doing your most holy will. The second death can do no harm to them. Praise and bless my Lord, and give thanks, and serve him with great humility. "We have had an unscheduled stop at Triacastela today because Greg has been struck by a nasty bout of dizziness whenever he tries to get up. He has spent the day in bed and we’ll see how he’s feeling tomorrow. I’m not sure how this will affect the last few days of our walk. Our lovely long walk is over, 5 days before we were due to finish in Santiago. We’re both very, very disappointed, and at this stage I’m not really sure what will happen next. We had organised to go to Germany next weekend, then fly home from there. We’ll wait and see." There was an additional post: The end? ... or Just the beginning? http://www.gregspurgin.com/walking-the-camino-de-santiago/2010/10/03/the-end-or-just-the-beginning/ "Just 5 days and 120kms from our final destination, after 5 weeks of walking, our lovely long walk is over. Greg spent a night in hospital in Lugo, and is now ‘home’ and improving, but not enough for us to complete our walk on this trip. It’s so disappointing for us both, but rather than focus on it, I’m going to write about the good stuff, and there’s been plenty of that." And... yes, they were able to make it all the way to Santiago, but they arrived two years later, this time walking from Portugal. In one yard, a sheep was perched with its front feet on a fence, and it peered at me over the top. He or she looked cute, and I stopped for a photo. From the adjacent house, a man emerged to talk. He spoke a little English, and we were able to have some conversation... this man didn't believe that the name of this animal was 'sheep' in English. I told him a few times, but I don't think he believed me.... (From Page 183 Camino de Santiago in 20 days). We reached there at about 1:30 and since there is no albergue (which we knew) we checked in to a small hotel with a 3 bed room and private bath - what luxury after the many nights in dormitories and waiting in line for showers and toilets or even sometimes finding a space for the backpack on the floor." "We each took a shower and Josef found they would do our washing for us for $4 total. We quickly pooled all our dirty clothes and gave them to be washed. AnneLine
8/14 Today's Journey: Ribadiso to Labacolla 30.6 KM Ribadiso ........................................... Labacolla........................................... 30.6 Comment from AnneLine: Tomorrow -- Mt. Joy and Santiago!!!! Today we will travel from Rabadiso to Labacolla. At Labacolla, Pilgrims traditionally bathe off the dust of the pilgrimage and prepare for the final miles to the Cathedral. They look forward, eagerly, for the sight of Monte do Gozo - Mount Joy! - which is where they will finally be able to see the Cathedral for the first time. This is a good time to prepare our own hearts as we are about to finish our virtual Camino. You may also want to plan to bring they small stone you have been carrying, in order to leave it near the church at which you will attend Mass for the Solemnity of the Assumption. The weather became beautiful as we walked and I am sure you will be pleased to hear that the cuckoo was singing for us. "When we arrived we took our showers and sat outside in the sun (with my hat and sunscreen) and enjoyed a beer. I hung my sleeping bag out in the sun to air. It has been quite a while since I have been able to do that and I am sure it will feel fresh tonight. "We stopped once for coffee and again about two hours later for a beer and we shared a boccadillo between the three of us. Our goal was a small town called Lavacolla.. Now it is very near the airport and has lost much of its character but we found a hostal that will be fine for one night and only 11 km from Santiago which will be about a two hour walk in the morning. "However, as the name of the village suggests "Lava" relates to washing and it is where the pilgrims would traditionally wash and cleanse themselves before entering the city. Today there is still a small chapel dedicated to the pilgrim saint St Roque. It has a covered portico and sits in a shaded grove of trees on the edge of the village. http://james-ontheway.blogspot.com/2013/05/day-31-burres-near-calzada-to-lavacolla.html "Everything around was very overgrown and it looked as if it needs a lot of renovation. The door was locked but I was able to take a picture through a window. "The hostal is nice enough for us and we will be fine. They also offer a Peregrino menu for dinner but not until 8:00 pm which is a bit late but we can manage. "...we are now within 11 km, 7 miles of Santiago." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please pray for traveling on the camino, and following this virtual pilgrimage. Lavacolla to SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA http://james-ontheway.blogspot.com/2013/05/day-32-lavacolla-to-santiago-de.html We were awake early and ready to leave by 6:45. Breakfast was set to start at 7:00 but they were ready when we came down so we had our breakfast and were ready to leave by 7:15. It was once again a cold morning, about 4°C but the sky looked as if the few high clouds would soon clear. The first part of the final stretch was uphill and we soon warmed up as the sun rose. We continued through woods and small villages, past the Spanish TV station studios at the top of the hill then started our descent towards Santiago. Soon we were in the suburbs having stopped to get one last sello (stamp) in our pilgrims passes before we entered the city. It was exciting to get our first sight of the cathedral towers and then to stand in front of it at 9:00 am. There were very few people about and it was still cold in the shade by the west end of the cathedral as the sun was still quite low in the east. Our first view of the spires of the cathedral http://james-ontheway.blogspot.com/2013/05/day-32-lavacolla-to-santiago-de.html We made our way to the Oficina del Peregrino, Pilgrim Office in a street behind the cathedral which had just opened at 9:00 and soon we were in front of one of the people who examine the record in the Credential (pilgrim passport) with all the stamps and decide if the record meets the requirements for the Compostela, a document in Latin that certifies that you have completed the requirements of a true Christian pilgrimage. We all received our Compostelas and our journey was officially completed. It was a very special moment for all three of us. Now we are entitled to a 50% reduction in our time in purgatory when we die according to the ancient doctrine. http://james-ontheway.blogspot.com/2013/05/day-32-lavacolla-to-santiago-de.html More about James' visit to the Cathedral over the next few days... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please pray for traveling on the Camino, and following this virtual pilgrimage. AccountDeleted
While walking through your virtual pilgrimage, I have also been reading a book called 'The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry' by Rachel Joy. It is about a man who receives a card from an old friend saying that she is dying of cancer. He write a card back to her and goes to the postbox to mail it but decides to make the walk to see her instead so writes back to tell her to stay alive until he arrives. He sets off without any equipment or training or preparation. His journey reminded me very much of mine on the Camino. Along the way he learns about himself and about faith and about perseverance. There is something amazing about walking for a long time and simply letting go of everything else. Thank you Anne for finishing off the journey. I have such wonderful )and horrific) memories of the Camino. If I had had more money, I would have liked to have finished it myself, but your virtual Camino has been almost as good!:)
