Socrates
Source please. What I heard was he only mentioned race after the police asked about the kid's race, and he answered, "black, I guess." Edited July 14, 2013 by Socrates
Seven77
Source please. http://abcnews.go.com/US/video/george-zimmermans-911-call-played-in-court-19473559 The 1st reference was due to his being asked by the police, “what race is he?" Fine… but keep listening and Zimmerman voluntarily says that the suspicious character is a "black male." Anyway, that wasn't really the main point of my post. Winchester
In my experience, people describing a suspect, if they talk for very long, repeat characteristics. One of the most often repeated is skin color.

I just find it interesting that you don't have the basic facts of what happened and still feel comfortable making a judgement about the event. I find it interesting that you haven't addressed anything Important that I've written. After I mentioned that Zimmerman got out of his car and began pursuing I explicitly stated that I was making a conjecture--- Not a judgment. But I stand by my statement that Martin was ultimately killed because Zimmerman got out of his car. Edited July 14, 2013 by Seven77

Maggyie
I don't think Zimmerman was talking to the cops, he was talking to a 911 dispatcher. It's easy to forget because when you say "I'm calling the cops!" or "the house is on fire!" you dial 911. But the people on the other end of the line are NOT the police, nor are they firemen. They are call center workers who send the police/firemen out to you.
BG45
So, funny thing...the delete button is next to the multiquote button and every time I went to hit multiquote, I was shaking. Stories like this one made me dislike cops until I realized that much of the problem has to do with the amount of power we give them. Cops are normal people trying to do their jobs. Like the rest of us, they're subject to make mistakes based on their biases and prejudices. Power can be one of the biggest factors. After a cop recounted a particular story to me, I lolfully asked, "wait, you guys can't actually beat people up like the old days, right?". She looked at me for a second and responded, "I have a gun and a badge. I can do whatever the hell I want." They are normal folks, but sometimes there's unfortunately a specific personality type drawn to the profession. I agree power can corrupt...but sometimes, the corruption's already there. One of the profs I had once said "I started out respecting police when I was young, because my parents told me to and that cops were good guys. By the time I did my bachelors in criminal justice, I knew some good cops and some bad cops already. By the time I did my Masters, I realized how many cops are [thing I probably shouldn't post], and then by the time my PhD was done,.." gonna cut the quote off there, because nothing constructive was said. I think Zimmerman would be guilty of manslaughter even if Trayvon was white. I don't think Trayvon's race played a role in his decision to use lethal force. I don't think he's a murderer. But he did create a situation that led to a minor dying and he should be held responsible for that. The more things change the more they stay the same: Agreed on those points. While I respect that the due process model of justice was used, with a jury deciding Zimmerman's legal guilt/non-guilt, I was shocked he didn't at least get manslaughter. A seventeen year old kid died and by not paying attention to what 911 told him to do, he at least set up the situation that led to it, by getting out of the car. Conflicting claims of having the gun pulled or not, from the moment he left the car, he set up a situation that was going to end poorly. Ever read Sundown Towns btw, since you've got the pic there? Love Lowen's work, both it and Lies My Teacher Told Me. The only thing that keeps the town I'm in now from being one is probably that the residents hate all college students, just some more than others (because they're not white)...I know white as I am, I've been followed and confronted by the cops twice while walking at night here. To give an idea of the town, one of the new people last year asked me if segregation laws were still on the books here. Black students tend to live almost exclusively on one block and the "totally not racist" cops always have one undercover car watching said block 24 hours a day. I didn't know that you were an avid COPS fan. By any chance, are you a police officer, considering you seem to be a bit happy to make comments asking such things, at those you disagree with?
