4588686
Just two men who screwed up. One man. One minor. I agree with most of what you said and if Trayvon Martin had been 29 as well then this would be a completely different situation. And if Martin had made it to his house and then left again then that would also completely change the situation. But that claim isn't substantiated. Socrates
People seem to think there must be a good guy and a bad guy in this. Encounters between decent people can go south quickly. Trayvon and Zimmerman can both be decent people, have an altercation, and someone walks away dead. Zimmerman doesn't have to be a racist to think a kid he doesn't recognize walking through the neighborhood is suspicious. He just has to be a guy worried about his neighborhood and sick of bad guys getting away with stealing stuff. Trayvon doesn't have to be a thug to get pissed at a grown man following him. Pissed off happens, and if one believes the narrative, Trayvon did not think Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch. And going back outside? The guy who you thought was following you is still outside. I get confronting that guy. Most people with a number of fights in their history will attest to moving in and continuing to hit a downed opponent. That's instinct. It's not nice. It is a crime. But it doesn't mean someone's a thug. I've done the same. The only issue is if Zimmerman committed a crime. Trayvon died. That smells of elderberries. He was engaged in a peaceful activity when Zimmerman found him suspicious. Zimmerman didn't identify as neighborhood watch, apparently. He should have. That probably would have changed everything. Trayvon could have stayed in his house, called the cops about some weirdo following him, or even just hit Zimmerman one time. He didn't. That smells of elderberries. Following people is not a crime. Hanging out near their house is not a crime. Unless Zimmerman verbally threatened Trayvon or threw the first punch, Zimmerman did not commit a crime. If Trayvon threw the first punch, he did commit a crime, although one I well understand and wouldn't really fault him for. Sitting on someone down and continuing to hit them is beyond misdemeanor. We're looking at felony, here. Fights are quick, fights are dirty, and you act quick or you might well die. This struggle BS you see in the movies and in the ring is not fighting. I wish Zimmerman had been smarter. I wish Trayvon had been smarter. I don't think there's a real bad guy, here. Just two men who screwed up. This is the best summary of the facts of this case I've seen on this board. Ultimately it was a case of two guys making stupid (if understandable) decisions with lethal and tragic consequences. From early on, the Left tried to make it into a grand morality play about Race in America, when in reality, it is nothing of the sort.
Chestertonian
Sounds like the girl Martin was talking to on the phone that night feared that Zimmerman could be a gay rapist. Apparently she was worried about him going after Trayvon or his little brother. Here's an excerpt from the interview on Piers Morgan last night: MORGAN: You felt that there was no doubt in your mind from what Trayvon was telling you on the phone about the creepy ass cracka and so on, that he absolutely believed that George Zimmerman, this man, you didn't know who he was at the time, but this man, was pursuing him? JEANTEL: Yes. MORGAN: And he was freaked out by it? JEANTEL: Yes. Definitely after I say may be a rapist, for every boy, for every man, every -- who's not that kind of way, seeing a grown man following them, would they be creep out? She continued: "And people need to understand, he didn't want that creepy ass cracker going to his father or girlfriend's house to go get -- mind you, his little brother was there. You know -- now, mind you, I told you -- I told Trayvon it might have been a rapist." http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2013/07/15/jeantel_i_told_trayvon_zimmerman_might_have_been_a_rapist.html Edited July 16, 2013 by Chestertonian
