HisChildForever
After Mass it was announced that 11 CCD teachers are still needed for the upcoming school year. I didn't get a chance to ask about the hours so I plan to call the rectory Monday. Still, I have the sneaking suspicion that classes are held during weekday afternoons - as I've never known CCD to be held on Sundays - which eliminates me from the running. While I haven't nailed a full-time job yet (I have a follow-up interview this week so fingers crossed lol) there's no way I can at present commit to like Tuesday afternoons at 3:30. I guess I made this thread to vent a little. It seems that the only people who can teach CCD are stay-at-home parents or retired people. It bugs me that young and middle-aged adults don't really "fit" in parish life. My parish has a lot of events, but...10am Bible study on Wednesdays? Really? No one with a full-time job (unless you work second shift) can do that. smh.
OnlySunshine
That's weird. At my parish and my former parish, they have PREP (the same as CCD) at 10am on Sunday mornings. The ones that are usually held during the week are on Wednesdays and they tend to be for the teens studying for Confirmation. When I was a high school senior, I taught Pre-K CCD for a year. Sister Marie
That is interesting. Is the idea that the public school kids come as soon as their school is dismissed in the afternoon? Most of our parishes in this diocese have CCD or PREP one night during the week at 6 or 7.

BG45
At my old parish and the one I'm at now, they have it on weekday evenings because of people's schedules. (It's intense though, the program they use. The CCD teachers have to go through training courses that are often offered out of state or other side of the state and it takes X number hours of training to be able to teach the next grade level.) MissyP89
Down here, K-6 is on Sunday morning after the 9:30 Mass, 7th grade is Tuesday night 7-8:30, and 8th grade is Wednesday night 7-8:30.
MIKolbe
I am a catechist. Our CCD is on Sunday...8-915 & 10-1115. To get certified as a catechist was the challenging part, as many of the classes were weekdays in the am and early afternoon. there were some in the evenings, so it worked out. Maybe talk to Father? I too feel a lot of parish life at my parish takes place when I'm at work.
tinytherese
I've noticed too that parish committee groups meet during the day. Then again the majority of the people at my parish are retired.

When the deacon mentioned that almost a dozen CCD teachers were needed, he didn't mention anything about training. The closest thing he said was that if anyone lacks confidence or isn't completely sure about a teaching to consult one of the deacons or fathers. Spem in alium
I'm a catechist. Our classes are held once a week at 9am on Wednesday mornings, and most of our catechists are retired people. I am probably the youngest and was able to commit because of my uni schedule. It is a shame that there's less opportunity for younger people to be involved, because catechism is such a wonderful ministry.
Tufsoles
I was a CCD Teacher for many years. I have seen parishes do it during the week and on sunday mornings. I stopped teaching because they changed they times from sunday to a weekday evening. At that time I worked evening and I had to drop this. I had a lot of kids crying when they found out I had to quit because of the change. I had a lot of parents complain about it having their child lose their favorite CCD Teacher because of this. Parish wouldn't budge. I end up seeing alot people during that time go to different parishes because of this.

As a DRE I intentionally remove catechists whose children in their classes are attached to them instead of to Christ. If children are crying and parents leaving the parish because you personally are not teaching, something has gone terribly wrong. I am sorry to be blunt, but that is the truth of it. A great catechist would be horrified that children have built that kind of cult of personality around them.

Share with Father your desire to be a team player, show him that you are faithful and obedient, and tell him you are available and want to be involved. I am willing to bet he will jump at the chance to have another reliable volunteer. If classes are weekday afternoons that's because when the kids can be there. It's not an indictment against other adults.

And maybe this was the last straw for parents - as in, maybe there were numerous issues going on with the parish and this broke the camel's back. Oh and your last sentence is a serious back-handed compliment. Wow. If you see this as a problem right now, how can you be a part of the solution? They're not going to change the day/time of the CCD program for one person.
