PhuturePriest
So, I plan to just hand in a homeschool transcript when I go to college. Every college I'm looking at (Including the seminary) accepts them wholeheartedly and they are very homeschool friendly (Whereas some State colleges aren't). But my father thinks I should get a GED instead, so I can say I really graduated. However, I think it would look worse if I got a GED, as it isn't looked upon very highly. Which, in the eyes of colleges, is better?
homeschoolmom
In all of my research for colleges for my children, I have never been told to have them pursue a GED. They are happy to accept a diploma from our homeschool (along with a transcript). I was advised to include more detail in our transcript-- texts used, co-op classes, etc.
Chestertonian
I have my GED and am now in graduate school. Community colleges admit GED graduates, and it's a lot cheaper to get your first two years out of the way at a CC and then transfer to a university. homeschoolmom
http://www.hslda.org/docs/news/2012/201203010.asp I know lots of homeschool grads who have gone on to college. I don't know any who have a GED. Edited July 13, 2013 by homeschoolmom
homeschoolmom
My understanding is that they care more about your ACT or SAT score than your diploma. High schools of all kinds vary in content and value. The tests tend to tell them more.

So how would I then convince my father of this? He wants me to do something official (Despite the fact my sister just handed in a transcript, and she excelled in college). Should I call someone from Benedictine and have them speak to my father so they can convince him that a transcript is better? It will be more convincing than me telling him this. If yes, then who do I contact?

I would email the advisor assigned to your geographic location http://www.benedictine.edu/admissions/counselorscontact-us and simply ask what is required for homeschool students. Let them know when you plan to graduate and that you intend to submit a transcript with your application. Ask what type of transcript they prefer-- a standard one with class titles and grades or an annotated one with textbook titles and content. Then simply ask if they require homeschoolers get a GED. I'm willing to bet money that they don't. My friend's daughter was a freshman last year and she didn't. (Though she had some CC credits from duel enrollment, but I still don't think they require it.) Also ask if they prefer the ACT or SAT. Once you get an email exchange, just show it to your dad. Edited July 13, 2013 by homeschoolmom

I know for a fact they don't require a GED; my sister went to Benedictine solely with a transcript. That's what confuses me so much about my dad. I would think he'd be *less* apprehensive about the second child than the first. Who knows?

PhuturePriest
Hijack: How does the seminary work? Do most futurepriests go after high school? Seminary lasts a total of eight years: Four years in Minor Seminary and four years in Major Seminary. They're shaped and function like colleges, and you can enter as soon as you graduate high school. I've come to accept that my parents simply don't believe in me. :P Everyone else seems to think I'm really smart, though, so that's a plus. Luigi
I agree with Homeschoolmom - The diploma should be adequate. All colleges require transcripts fro admission. The ACT/SAT score will be very important. That said, it would do no harm - and cost little money - to acquisece to your father's wishes and get the GED as well. Include it in your application packet as further evidence of your college readiness.

We'll find out soon enough.

I would advise against taking it "just because" or just to satisfy your dad. Like it or not, the GED does carry a stigma that a homeschool diploma does not. Unless seminary, college or the military *requires* it for admission, I would not take it. Benedictine will accept you on your transcript and ACT/SAT alone, I'm pretty sure. Please look at this. And... I wouldn't be too quick to assume that your dad feels that *you* are inadequate. Maybe he is unsure that your home life and schooling has adequately prepared you for college. (Unlike your sister who may have had more rigorous schooling.) The ACT or SAT would be more accurate in determining that.
