Poorly Catechized Convert
So I'm curious if I have a good approach to discerning mortal from venial sin. As a result, I'm going to post a scenario that I'm inclined to label as a venial sin. I'm wondering if you all agree with my assessment. Say someone finds themselves on a site that is unassociated with a sinful topic, for a non-sinful reason, but then they find out it supports something that's sinful. Since that's not why they are there they continue looking through the site. Every so often they come across a page that may contain the sinful topic, so then the quickly look for it. In this case it's done on the spur of the moment, with no prior thought to the potential sinfulness of their actions (they were more concerned with their reason for being on the site, not the near occasion of sin). After a few pages in which they looked for the topic, they realized they shouldn't be doing this because of their association to the topic. As a result, they leave. So my assessment of this would be venial. Because they weren't looking for the sinful material, until they were confronted with it. So I think this would mean that full consent of the will would not be present. Also, since they never thought about the sinfulness, full knowledge, I'd think would be absent. As soon as the reflected on their actions, they left the website to avoid further temptation. So is my decision accurate?
To Jesus Through Mary
I would say that you decision seems correct. But these kind of "sin" questions are best for your confessor. If it is something that is disturbing your conscience, go to confession and ask the priest. You will be forgiven and begin to form your conscience a bit more each time. :)
Basilisa Marie
Moral sins have to meet three criteria: A serious matter Full consent of your will you know it's a mortal sin/know it's a sin/know that it's wrong. All other sins are venial sins. But like TJTM said, DEFINITELY talk about this with your confessor, he's in the unique position to be able to help you with your individual situation. :) Plus, it's his job. :)
Poorly Catechized Convert
Thanks. I'll definitely take this to m confessor. I just wanted to ask here first because I was thinking about attending a daily Mass today and wanted to make a proper decision as to whether or not I should receive the Eucharist. The problem is my lack of knowledge and my inability to know exactly what I was thinking. I know in the back of my mind I would have viewed this as sinful, but it took five minutes until I realized this fact. As soon as I came to this conclusion, I left.
