brianthephysicist
Some people are so dense that, as a joke goes, if they walked into a room they would immediately bend and swallow all the light. (for those that get the physics reference) lololol I want to say this delicately; please do not take it the wrong way. You struggle with sins too. Different ones, but grave nonetheless. And you are Catholic, no matter how much you struggle with those sins. You are Catholic when you are successful at resisting those sins, and you are Catholic when you fail. If one person's particular sin to deal with is that they have to overcome racial prejudices, then we should try to treat that with the same sensitivity as someone who is particularly inclined to alcoholism or masturbation or inappropriate anger. I need to find a way to give this props.

Props all day and you don't have to say it delicately but thanks. If you thought my intent was to act like I don't have any sin in my life you're mistaken. You nailed 3 of my favorites right there. I'll spare you the other top 5. I know I'm a floppy mess and so do all of you. When I go to Mass I sit in the back and I don't go up for communion. Racism still sucks and Catholics who are racist and still go to Mass and Communion without confessing it need called out on it. If masturbation is such a big deal so is hating Jamal cause he's black, poor, and from the hood. Godbless.
dUSt
I think theres a lot of white racist catholics in america. I would venture to say theres more white racist catholics in america then there are racist black protestants. Black people can't be racist. Only the segment of population that is in the social and economic position of power can legitimately practice racism. Black people can be prejudiced, but not racist. Winchester
There are two types of people I can't stand in this world. Those who are intolerant other people's cultures. And the Dutch.

"No, you're not." "Yes I am, I'm... I'm a huge... I'm a huge racist." "No... no you're not." "Yeah I am. I'm racist every day... all the time." "Well then call me the n-word." "What? Why?" "Call me the n-word." http://youtu.be/3A_jeCAfn0E Getting out of jury duty is easy. Winchester
What about members of the segment of population in the social and economic position of power who have absolutely no power themselves? The definition is very specific and in my opinion was created for political purposes. It's like saying you can't like cheesecake if you have no power to obtain it. The qualifiers around the definition essentially state that you can be racist without power, but it doesn't matter.

No, but really, i disagree. Take the 5%ers. Some of them are pretty darn racist. Also, poor white folk can be just as racist and rich white folk... maybe I'm misunderstanding your post? It's like saying you can't like cheesecake if you have no power to obtain it. The qualifiers around the definition essentially state that you can be racist without power, but it doesn't matter. It was created for political purposes. So was racism. And so was the attempt to conflate racist sentiments in the black community with those of the white community. Individual black people can be terrible human beings just as much as individual white people but racism structurally in the US reflects the preferences, real or manufactured (southern strategy woops!) of white Americans. The 5 percenter's racism has no actual affect because they are not in a position in which their racism means anything. In other words, nobody is being affected by the 5 percenter's racism because they have no real power. It's like if I hated people with hair, I would never allow people with hair sign up for this phorum. Everyone with hair would be affected--because I am the boss. Now, if a noob signed up and said they hate bald people, and said bald people should not be webmasters, I'd simply ban them. I would not be affected in any way. My prejudice has real consequences. Their prejudice does not. That's why there is the philosophical idea that black people cannot be racist.

Malcolm X was a black leader who wielded tremendous power within his community, and he used it. He actually met secretly with the KKK before the famous March on Washington, to discuss possible meeting points (both being part of separatist movements). Fidel Castro also visited him privately during a trip to New York. To say blacks (or any minorities) have no power is to take away the significant political action they have carried out. Hip Hop was another example of black political power...it wasn't merely entertainment. Malcolm eventually moved away from black separatism when he became an orthodox Muslim, but he never gave up black political identity. I wouldn't say Malcolm ever hated white people in the true sense, even before he became an orthodox Muslim, but his black politics was structurally...well, racist, if we're defining race as a separatist system. Black political movements in the United States were also tapped into African independence movements, giving another front of power. I think we need a clearer definition of racism, because definining it too structurally completely removes the personal element of color hatred (which was a defining feature of American racism).
