This priest now lives here in Calgary. :) I have met him a few times, but mostly he says Mass up in Edmonton.

He is an especially excellent confessor. One day I went to him for confession before a weekday Mass. The line was fairly short, and he was hearing confessions all during Mass as well, so he took some extra time to give me some great advice.

Where was that filmed? Cuz I'm pretty sure it's not the Priory of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Charles Town, WV, but it is FREAKY how similar that parish church is to the priory. The Canons Regular celebrate the MEF in that priory. Weird...

Nihil, how come I have never met a MEF-attender who seems joyful? They always seem so grave... Maybe I just haven't met the right people? Or maybe it's a certain personality type that's attracted to the MEF? I am certainly often called "grave" myself.

I am not sure where it was filmed. I do not think it would have been West Virginia though - probably in Vancouver.

That is a good question, I am not really sure. I know that I have met many people at my parish whom I would not call grave. I am not sure how people might perceive me... serious perhaps, but I hope not dour. I certainly have met joyful people at the traditional Mass. I hope I am one of them, too.

I see that there are several FSSP houses in the Lafayette (Indiana) area. I know that at the St. Boniface parish a MEF is celebrated one Sunday a month. I presume they are "importing" a priest for that. Do you have any thoughts on how I might "lobby" or "recruit" for more-regular MEFs in that area?

Start with forming your 'stable group'. As many as you can feasibly get as a firm, committed group, but there is no required minimum number. With that group, write a clear and realistic set of goals, for instance "a weekly traditional Mass held at a local parish." Be willing to pledge money and time to work with any priests who are willing. Priests may need training, for instance with the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, or the FSSP. They may need vestments. They will certainly need committed servers and a schola. They will need an altar Missal and cards, and those are definitely not cheap. All these things take time and money, and it is a sign of devotion and good will if the stable group making the petition can also promise to support the material considerations.

Talk to parish priests first, to see if one of them will accommodate you and make time in his schedule for such a Mass. Ask several. If that is a dead end, ask the bishop for him to come up with a solution for the group. In theory any priest has the right to do so under Summorum Pontificum and Universae Ecclesiae, but the bishop has an obligation. But remember that you must be prepared to do your part as well.

If this remains a dead end, you petition the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, who can advise your bishop on how to properly care for you.

But if they are in fact "importing" an FSSP (or other) priest to offer the MEF once a month, wouldn't he already have all those things and simply bring them with him? Couldn't we then simply ask for him to come more often, and reimburse his costs?

That is one possibility. But as I understand it, the FSSP are already stretched quite thin, and cannot go everywhere they are asked.

I do love the FSSP. I think I have made that abundantly clear on this site. :smile3: But I also think we need to get more diocesan priests regularly celebrating the traditional Mass. I think that is one key to a proper restoration of liturgical sense. I do not think it is wise for us to assume that the only people who regularly celebrate the traditional Mass are the traditionalist groups such as the FSSP, SSJV, ICRSS, etc.. That plays into that traditionalist ghetto that we have been trying to stay away from.

I understand. Ok. Let's see what happens when I get there.

Are there parishes in the general area with a daily traditional Mass that might be able to give you some support? Or a local Una Voce chapter?

Not sure what you mean by daily "traditional" Mass. MEF? No. Pretty darn proper? Yes: St. Boniface, the one with the monthly MEF. Una Voce? No idea. Let me google that.

The Purdue campus ministry is run by Dominican Friars out of Chicago. You'd think they'd be down for the MEF, but they don't offer one. I don't know if it's because the students don't show enough interest, or because they leave all the traddy stuff to St. Boniface's (which is only about 2.5 miles away—my house dead between them ;-), or because they don't actually support it. I will ask them when I get there, though. Do you think Dominicans would be supportive? The brothers are in habit.

Oh, no. They cancelled even the monthly Mass until... no one seems to know when.

Actually, this video was most likely taken in Vancouver B. C. because Fr. is from Holy Family parish there (fssp), and the youtube account shows other videos from the same parish. (B.C. catholic and all too...)

And Nihil, not dour :)
