homeschoolmom
Apparently the two fatalities were Chinese teenagers coming to the US for summer camp. :( Edited July 7, 2013 by homeschoolmom
AnneLine
There's a lot of conflicting info coming out of the news here (understandably) but it sounds like the 2 teens may have been part of one of those summer language and culture immersion programs. We get a lot of them here, and there were bunch of them on the plane. This is a link to the SF Chronicle's website (not a wonderful paper, but it seems to have pretty good basic coverage on this....) Passengers included 60 students and 10 teachers on a summer tour from China, said Wang Chuan, spokesman for Chinese consulate in San Francisco. He said he understood the students - from Zhe Jiang and Shan Xi provinces would be touring the United States, studying English and learning American culture. He said the consulate will be offering support for the students to obtain visas to return home. Half of the contingent - 35 students and staff - had been en route to West Valley Christian Church and School in the San Fernando Valley community of West Hills, according to the school's website. "They were scheduled to be here on Tuesday for three weeks," the school said. "Now, we are unsure what their next steps will be ... but we are certain that God knows and will help us care for them in this time of crisis." http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/SF-plane-crash-victims-identified-as-two-teens-4650990.php BTW, The San Fernando valley is about 700 miles away in the southern part of California, so it must have been a transfer point for them at SFO.... They've found the flight recorder and related stuff, so hopefully we will find out what happened..... just sad. Praying for all.... and very aware it could have been SO MUCH worse.... Roamin Catholic
 Then... how?? Wow... A few years back a BA 777 had a similar crash (minus the fire) at LHR due to Ice crystals forming in the fuel line and that caused thrust issues during landing causing the flight to land almost 1000ft short of the runway. In SFO, something like that would fit with the landing gear clipping the seawall and then slamming the plane into the runway threshold. It really is a testament to today's airliners that so many people survived a crash/fire like this one. Flying has never been safer than these modern times. BG45
So glad things have been (relatively) good so far...I'll go with God's providence and modern engineering for there only being two deaths out of over 300 people!
AnneLine
As noted before, lots of conflicting stuff. This seems to summarize most recent stuff.... sounds like mistakes may have been made... but good choices were made after that which minimized what could have been horrific..... and that the planes are designed for maximum survivability and ease of egress... Thank God. http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/07/us/plane-crash-main/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
AnneLine
They are pretty sure it was NOT ice crystals, I think. That was one of the early hypotheses, but quickly was rejected. And of course, it was one of our few really beautiful days this time of year... no fog, no wind. THAT probably helped in making it better than it could have been... arfink
If the weather was clear, then I think they can only assume the plane was not answering to the controls properly, perhaps an unusual loss of thrust. Experienced pilots (and I can only assume he was a seasoned pilot with an airline that large) don't just do things like put the tail into a sea wall. AnneLine
Yeah, but read the article I imbedded earlier... they aren't saying exactly what, but something was going on.... http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/07/us/plane-crash-main/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
arfink
I've been doing some reading about the safety systems on the 777, and given what I'm reading, either those systems had to have failed, or the pilots somehow managedto convince themselves that those systems couldn't possibly be correct. But then, I don't know how you manage to ignore sensors which are telling you that you are going into a stall condition.
AnneLine
And now this. Don't know if it is serious research, or just wild stuff... but I have to head out the door now... http://news.yahoo.com/asiana-says-pilot-crashed-plane-training-010133596.html
AnneLine
And heading out to mass, the very happy SF news now is reporting that one of the 2 victims may have been run over by first responders.... http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Official-SF-plane-crash-victim-may-have-been-run-4651323.php Praying for everyone involved... so it is good I am heading out to Mass right now!!!! And I will pray for all of you, too!!!!
arfink
Ah, the pilot was new to the 777. That might explain a lot. Still, the 777 has a lot of really impressive safety features, including a motorized flight stick that will tug against you and vibrate if you're off course. I wonder if those were working. :ohno:
