Daily Mass On Saturday

I'm wondering what y'all's situations are because in my town, only 1 out of 5 parishes offer Saturday daily mass and I don't understand why the others don't offer it. Sometimes I can't make it to the one parish which has daily mass on Saturdays, and then I'm out of luck and miss mass that day. 

 

By "daily mass" I mean a mass which does not fulfill the Sunday obligation. Nearly all parishes offer the Saturday evening "Anticipated" mass, so I'm not asking about that.

Yes! I ran into this problem in a couple diocese I have been too. When I went to San Antonio back in March, I was hard pressed to find one remotely close to me that offered a Saturday daily Mass. Many parishes around here don't offer one, but thankfully two pretty close to me do.  NYC just about every parish has a Saturday daily Mass.

Could have something to do with the priest's schedule, they might have to do the 4pm Mass plus wedding / funeral Masses.

I realize I'm not a Catholic who has been Catholic too long overall, but I don't think I've ever run into a parish offering a daily Mass on Saturday in WV or PA, just the 4pm/5pm Sunday obligation Mass of Anticipation.

I also find this very problematic. Here in Virginia, I have never seen a Saturday daily Mass. In Indiana, thank God, the Dominican Friars offer one at the Catholic campus ministry at Purdue. But even St. Boniface—a right proper parish, if you know what I mean—doesn't have one. I really wish every parish offered a Saturday morning daily Mass.

Where I went to college, two out of six parishes in the city offered a Saturday Mass (although two of those parishes were joined together).  That was a very Catholic city though, and there are probably other parishes on the mainland but I don't know them. Typical island mentality - if it's not on the island it doesn't exist. :hehe: 

 

Now I live in an area that has mostly Baptists - and other general non-conformists and dissenters (to use the historical term). There are two Catholic parishes nearby, the parish I attend offers a Saturday Mass every week. The other used to offer it on every first Saturday (EF) but their parish priest passed away a few months ago and they don't have a new one yet so it's been suspended for the time being.

In Liverpool, the Cathedral had a Saturday Mass, as did my parish, but my parish only did because it was run by Benedictines. Here my parish does on first Saturdays, and if there's an important feast day (like Sts. Peter and Paul). Out of the other parishes near, maybe 1 or 2 have Saturday Mass.

I'm quite lucky to have a church on my street which offers Saturday Mass despite relatively limited attendance. Most of the surrounding parishes seem to do so also.

My parish has daily Mass every day, including Saturdays.  My pastor, with the permission of the Bishop, started offering first Saturday Masses for the Country including religious freedom and putting an end to abortion, same-sex "marriage", etc.

Also, I should mention that my former parish offers daily Mass every day as well. 

 

A parish where a priest (a family friend) works in my diocese that is near me does not have Mass on Saturday mornings.  They have daily Mass on Mon-Fri at 8am and Saturday is the Vigil Mass at 5:30pm.

 

Another smaller parish in proximity to where I live offers first Saturday Masses but no Mass on other Saturdays except for the Vigil at 5:30pm.

 

The other parish about 20 minutes away offers 1st Saturday Masses at the historic Church but they are healing Masses.  They don't offer regular Saturday Mass at the Main Church or the historic Church.

As previously mentioned, the reason most parishes are unable to offer Saturday daily Masses is normally due to the priest's schedule, regularly having to offer both a vigil Mass and, generally, a wedding/funeral/special Mass on Saturdays. Though the latter Mass may not be a weekly occurrence, it's frequency makes it difficult for priests to keep to a regular schedule that involves a daily Saturday Mass. And, keeping in mind Canon 905, a priest is limited to how many Masses he might offer in a day.

 

So, in my area, parishes with multiple priests (2-3) are generally the ones with a Saturday daily Mass. Those with a single priest are unable to do so. While discussing this with one diocesan priest recently who's parish does offer a Saturday Mass, he pointed out how his associate had to say the daily and vigil Mass that weekend, because he had a funeral followed by a wedding on the same day. 

 

So, moral of the story: Pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood.
