the_rev
Hey everyone, I was wondering what your fourth of July Mass experience was like. Since every summer is different for me, I have experienced the fourth of July many different places. But never have I experienced what I experienced today. I believe myself to be a patriotic person. Heck, I would have been okay with one patriotic song. But look at the music repertoire for today at the Mass I went to: Processional: Star Spangled Banner (National Anthem) Presentation- America Communion- America the Beautiful Recessional- God Bless America After the recessional song the cantor shouted, "Happy Independence everybody" and then the organist broke into playing Stars and Stripes forever on the organ. It was just more than I could handle. Granted, I had been up since 2:45 working with a family whose father, son, brother, etc. was having emergency brain surgery. I'm just wondering, has anyone ever experienced a "Patriotic Mass" like this?

homeschoolmom
"Stars and Stripes Forever" is code in the theater for an impending disaster. :|

(Though if I were a priest I wouldn't allow even that. His Kingdom is not of this world after all.) But the national anthem of any country should never be sung at Mass under any circumstances. At least they didn't sing "I"m Proud To Be An American, Where At Least I Know I'm Free." Can you imagine that scene lol.

Archaeology cat
We had "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "God Bless America". There have been other times where they've sung "America, the Beautiful". I personally dislike patriotic songs at Mass, but that's me.
