CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's military has ousted the nation's Islamist president, replacing him with the chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court, calling for early presidential election and suspending the Islamist-backed constitution.

Army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday, said a government of technocrats will be appointed to run the country during a transition period he did not specify.

An aide of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, Ayman Ali, said the former leader has been moved to an undisclosed location. He gave no details.

Cheers erupted among millions of protesters nationwide who were demanding Morsi's ouster. Fireworks lit the Cairo night sky. Morsi supporters elsewhere in the city shouted "No to military rule."

Ya know, there's an episode of the West Wing where a coalition from a Middle Eastern country comes to the White House to work with an expert on our constitution to develop their own, and there's an argument over whether or not it's best to have a strong executive branch or a strong legislative, aka president vs parliament.  The argument being that the people have a history of problems with a strong single leader, and that a parliament would be safer.  I wonder if there isn't some wisdom in that.

Here's hoping that things continue as (relatively) bloodless as it has been and that our own Aloysius stays safe.

Aloysius is in Egypt?

I don't know the specifics, but yeah, he's doing something there over the summer.  I know on FB he said he'd been over to Tahrir Square the other day for a quick look before heading back to where he's staying.

Whoa, dangerous place to be. A young American was killed there recently.

edit: the American apparently died in Alexandria.
