cappie
Excommunication is the process of imposing a penalty or punishment on a baptised person that results in the exclusion of that person from union with the Catholic Church. The word comes from the Latin roots that mean to "expel from communion". This penalty is only placed on someone who has seriously violated an important Catholic teaching. Excommunication is never irreversible. Typical human choices that result in automatic excommunication include abortion, heresy, schism, apostasy, and violation of the seal of the confessional. In the Code of Canon Law, Book VI, canons 1311-1399 specify sanctions, penalalties, and censure processes that the Church imposes in certain situations. Some people that have been excommunicated are Martin Luther, King Henry VIII One of the most recent persons excommunicated for schism was Archbishop Lefebre the founder of the Society of St Pius X
