Basilisa Marie
The Harry Potter books were fun to read. I really do not understand the controversy surrounding the books among some Christians. At long last, Apo and I agree on something. :) I think Hell just froze over.
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Harry potter is not a good movie for christians to watch. Nore is Lord of the Rings. I know supposedly the writer of Lord of the Rings was supposedly catholic, just because he was catholic doesn't mean Lord of the Rings is good. Wizards aren't going to win the game for you, nore any form of magic. We are catholic christians what will win the game for us is faith, hope, love and peace, and stemming from these such virtues like courage and patience. Everyone from Father Robert Baron to Michael Voris praises The Lord of the Rings. J.R.R. Tolkien was an incredible Catholic. Do not judge him because you choose not to understand magic and its harmlessness in fiction.
maximillion
I think most of us CAN tell the difference between fantasy and reality. I have read both sets of books and watched all the films and I never yet started to even imagine magic was 'the answer'! Nor do I know anyone who does. Various adults have chosen to believe in magic since the beginning of the time people held beliefs, in fact most of those beliefs arose from magical thinking - and that was long before HP et al. Careful about that. There is real occultism, and it is evil.
maximillion
Well, there may be, but I have yet to come across it. Surely we are all able to use our intelligence and the discernment of the Holy Spirit to keep ourselves safe....... I know there are vulnerable people out there but can we really say they have entered into occultism as a result of watching HP? If so, then they must, IMO be people who have a learning disability at the very least.
MarysLittleFlower
Lions are fine. Lions, Rotary, etc, are service-based clubs. It's a great thing that they paid for your eye exam. :) Basically, the problematic ones are the quasi-religious societies, which include Masons (which have a history of being especially anti-Catholic, particularly in Europe, so much so that one of the reasons why the Militia Immaculata was founded was to "combat" the Masons). Oddfellows are also quasi-religious, so I dont' think Catholics can join them. Though one year I wrote them a nice thank you letter because they donated a ton of money to my high school band that allowed us to go on a trip to California, and I was band president. One of the biggest reasons why they're problematic is because they promote religious indifferentism, at least that's the biggest "on paper" reason why the Church is against them. In practice most have been pretty anti-Catholic, too. From this article talking about problems with the Masons: http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=1368 So yeah. :) I heard that groups like the Rotary club have many freemasons because often the masons go there to "recruit"... just something I heard! I'd avoid them just for that reason. Also it seems they started with freemasons. Rotary club is a club for influential people etc so it makes sense the masons would go there to get more members. hmm :(
MarysLittleFlower
regarding witchcraft in books and tv.... I almost became wiccan/druid after watching a tv show in my early teens. Sooo ...yes it can happen. I'm so glad God lead me away from that and I got baptized instead.

PhuturePriest
Also, there appear to be guns in those books. That makes it automatically lame if it's supposed to be about wizards.
