Dr. Bombay
Oh, Cardinal? You mean, not the Pope? Meaning it wasn't an infallible statement (And even if he was the Pope it wouldn't have been an infallible statement)? I've heard Cardinals say all sorts of heretical things. Should I listen to them simply because they are Cardinals? This seems to be what you are implying here. However, notice the Church has never in any way condemned Harry Potter, and countless Church leaders have praised it, The Lord of the Rings, and The Chronicles of Narnia, all of which use magic. I've heard Cardinals say all sorts of heretical things. Should I listen to them simply because they are Cardinals? This seems to be what you are implying here. Check, mate. :|
Oremoose
One of the pillars of western theology for 700 years, recommended by countless Popes, a blessing and curse to seminarians over the centuries. Sure, he could be wrong. But I'll take his opinion over the modern mind on most things. He did not believe in the immaculate conception. So he has been wrong... Also I have read other lists of virtues and vices from he era and they include laughter and clapping... I would not say that Aquinas is right nor wrong I merely think that he is talking about a different subject that's name has changed in time but the text remains. You didn't do anything to further your position, you just took away his appeal to authority (sacrificing your own selfsame appeal at the same time). Chestertonian
Clearly, there are church leaders on both sides of the debate. Guess we'll have to leave this one up to our individual consciences.
Amppax
FP: STD is a Sacred Theology Doctorate (I'm too lazy to look up the exact Latin). I'll find that "the more you know" meme later, it's late. Also, I'll just leave this here: "To summarize: What we have is an informal, brief, obscurely worded opinion, in a private letter that may or may not have been written by Ratzinger himself, apparently declining to comment on a book that he may or may not have perused about a series of books he may or may not have ever laid eyes on." PhuturePriest
I'm going to assume this is an attempt at humor. "Attempt" implies that I failed, which I most certainly did not.

Brother Vinny
BTW, would those who argue Harry Potter should be avoided make the same argument against Star Wars? If not, why not?
Nihil Obstat
I can't stop anyone from watching t.v and/or movies, just be righteous about what you watch and don't fill your heart and mind with doo doo . Listen to this song, it is about being a righteous movie watcher. http://youtu.be/jspGh30k7DI Please listen to the whole song, i have watched your franciscan priest on this matter before, i will watch it again just for you. I do hope you recognize the gigantic irony contained in this post. :hehe: I just wanted to point that out.

Yes, I'm aware of Aquinas and the Immaculate Conception. As he himself would tell you his theological suppositions ceased to have relevance once the Church pronounced a matter infallibly. The distinction he makes between studiousness and curiosity is quite clear for anyone who cares to take the time to read it, modern definitions notwithstanding. Brother Vinny
Still awaiting an answer on my Star Wars question. Maybe Harry Potter came too late into my life, since I never really wanted to be a wizard, but you can bet your sweet bippy I wanted to be a Jedi. I remember 10-year-old me, fresh from seeing The Empire Strikes Back at the theater, trying my hardest to will a balled pair of socks up into my hand. They never budged, It was a hard lesson about the difference between reality and make-believe. The differences between the Force and Harry Potter's magic are mostly superficial. So why don't we see the same arguments leveled against Star Wars that we do Harry Potter?
