cappie
In my opinion, whilst it is good to confess by number as long as you confess and are sorry for your sins, receive absolution and do the penance assigned then you don't have to go to confession again. To confess the number of sins comitted sometimes helps the priest to give good and helpful advice. I would encourage someone to try to remember the number of times someone had committed a sin as it also helps the person concerned to judge their own self and the danger associated with habitual sin. This is suggested in a positive way to help us grow in the spiritual life. Code of Canon Law Can. 988 §1 The faithful are bound to confess, in kind and in number, all grave sins committed after baptism, of which after careful examination of conscience they are aware, which have not yet been directly pardoned by the keys of the Church, and which have not been confessed in an individual confession.
