Ash Wednesday

I've known about it for years, that and the Cacophony Society has always interested me. I often am attracted to the idea of turning things on their head.

Being an artist myself and having an awareness of many of these movements, I find that some of the people involved genuinely try to be open minded and tolerant -- but others turn nasty and call you "mainstream" for your beliefs but fail to see the irony there (really, how many strictly observant Catholics do we really see nowadays?) or worse yet brand you a person of the "old ways" and one of "ignorance" and "hate."

On one hand, I find the movement interesting because it shows people are looking for more. That just dotting your i's, crossing your t's, working, consuming, consuming and consuming doesn't bring happiness, nor does material things.

On the other, certain things are problematic. Like, well, orgies. Or engaging in self-harming, risky behaviour. I often feel that while the movement shows that people are looking for more, it also reflects the lawlessness and disordered direction the west is going in, and that concerns me.

So, yeah, to me I have an interest in certain aspects of it from a creative standpoint, but have mixed feelings about it overall.

I thought I'd heard that a big part of Burning Man was psychodelic drug use. Which doesn't sound like a good life decision.

I'm conflicted on that topic.

Alcohol is allowed, but drugs aren't. Of course people can smuggle them in, but I read that if you're caught with any you're asked to leave.

Yeah, and they don't even like tobacco use there because it's such a pain to clean up after, and doesn't jive with their "leave no trace" philosophy.

Do tell. Please.

You're making a big assumption that I actually remember any stories to tell. I had been out of work for a bit. I was refusing to go on disability because I was refusing to believe I was disabled. Went there to sell crafts. I remember sitting in a hot spring with my 8 year old foster son. We went to a bunch of dinosaur museums on the way home. The most memorable thing is lots of really drunk people, and mud.

Conflicted regarding the first statement or second?

I just mean that I see the appeal of things like an ayahuasca experience. I'm also inclined to think that tripping on psychedelic mushrooms is about as wicked as mild alcohol intoxication.

'Shrooms is a little bit of a dice roll. I've known several people that have said they've taken some. One friend told me he lost all sensation but not consciousness. Hardly sounds like mild intoxication. Granted its anecdotal, but it's been enough to scare me away.

I personally am very uncomfortable with the idea of drugs period though. I really really hate not being in full control of myself.
