Rape Isn't A Big Deal. Hacking On The Other Hand . . .

Remember the Steubenville rape case that made national news months ago? Well apparently a "hacktivist" is facing 10 years in jail time for hacking into phones and such and leaking the incriminating evidence of the incident.

10 years! That's more than the sentences of the two rapists COMBINED. Are you flooping kidding me?

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, that's my motto.

There are ways to expose heinous crimes without breaking the law.  One may not do evil so that good may come of it.  That's consequentialism last time I checked.

The biggest problem isn't that he's getting 10 years of prison. That's a totally reasonable punishment for that crime.

The biggest problem is that the rapists aren't getting that much jail time combined, when they should have at least twice that each.

Yeah... I've known about this for a while. Sometimes I get really sick of Steubenville. And it isn't just because the air here is toxic.

Last time I checked, this "hacktivist" wasn't actually hacking, he was using publicly available information in novel ways, rather like Aaron Swartz. The charges are complete BS.

Don't think so actually. The hackers hacked personal emails, took over the football teams website, and basically tried to blackmail some prominent members of the community, because it was felt that they were covering it up (which they probably were). If the hackers didn't break any laws, they should have, because the whole private emails bit wasn't cool, nor the blackmail.

That being said, the response in Steubenville to this entire situation makes me sick. Unsurprisingly, it was largely ignored on campus, and most locals I talked to about it would typically pair any statement about the case with a defense of Steubenville, to the point it seemed the only thing people cared about was that Steubenville was being scrutinized nationally.

All in all, everything about this makes me angry, but mostly, I would just ask everyone pray for the girl who was the victim. What happened to her was horrific (she wasn't just raped, there are details aplenty in some of the reports). What has been lost in this whole circus is that some young girl is now scarred for life, and she needs lots and lots of prayers. Edited by Amppax

Laudate_Dominum

I just dropped an F-bomb in response to that. (No "we've got a badass over here" meme, please.)
