I'm Supposed To Write My Resignation Letter

I'm supposed to write my resignation letter at my current job. The new job would start Monday. They are still doing background checks with the contingent job offer.

I don't want anything horrible to happen (ID theft or something) and I end up unemployed Monday morning.

I also don't want to get the job and then screw up badly. This would be a great experience to have on my resume and in my career.

*gulp*

I'm kind of surprised that they need you so fast that you can't get a confirmation that you have 'passed' before you give notice.  It's generally NOT a great idea to give less than one week notice if you can avoid it.... especially if they haven't totally agreed to take you....

Don't want to sound paranoid... but this is the career counselor speaking....

I don't think you have to worry about ID theft... lots of companies are doing extensive background checks these days.... especially if the job has anything to do with kids or social services.   Many of those checks are required by government agencies.

I had to be 'livescanned' about 5 times in one year because I was doing counseling stuff and every agency had to do their own livescan and background check.  When I asked if they couldn't do one and have you get some kind of 'ok to hire' status certificate, they said no because there was no guarantee you hadn't dones something BAAAAD after the last scan.... so this was they only way they could be sure they had the most up-to-date data.

Sad... and FRUSTRATING!

Agreeing with AnneLine ... it is rare that a company needs you *that* quick that they won't give you time to provide the requisite two week notice to your current employer.  In fact -- it may be bad if you don't give two weeks.

Also I'm very surprized that they told you that you'd start on Monday if the background checks haven't happened.  Most companies won't set a start date until the checks are passed (the only exception is if you are applying for a job that requires a security clearance -- they'll perform a cursory background check, and then you start the paperwork for the security clearance which may take 6 months or so, maybe more).

I got the contingent job offer Tuesday of last week. It just takes longer going through this process than I realized. My boss is ok with things-they don't need to replace me right away.

That makes sense, L&T... may the Lord get you into the right hole on Monday MOrning!

And congrats on the new job... and hopefully everything works well.

I hate those blankety-blank security clearance checks!  I know we need 'em, but grrrrrrrr.....

I know they did start calling people Tuesday at least.  Maybe we can all pray that this works out great for me and that I do well?

L&T, I wouldn't worry too much.  It sounds as if you really did offer appropriate notice on your current/ending job... and they are open to you staying on while the security clearance is finished, so you haven't burned any bridges.

Most people know that these things are hard to predict.   My bet is that you can stay where you are until the clearance comes through... and then graciously leave either at the end of that week or perhaps at the end of that day.   Either way, everyone is behaving appropriately from the way you describe it.

I will pray hard for the best solution for everyone!

My papa worked for a company that required security clearances. He had his, but they once hired a young 'un straight out of college. Dude went nuts on getting the job: bought a new house, a new car, a summer home, etc. etc. etc. Six months later, he found out he didn't get his security clearance because of some minor thing he once did.

Sad story...

I had something similar happen in my current job! They offered me the position 1 week before the training class was scheduled to start. So I could only give 1 week notice. Meanwhile they hadn't completed my background/credit check yet. I was sweating, since I had already given notice at my old job (wanted to give them as much notice as possible). What if something came up and I already said adieu to my old employer? Luckily nothing did.

they (old job) were understanding about the short notice, although they did try to counteroffer!

I bet everything will be fine :)
