ithinkjesusiscool
Pax! How is self-loathing a form of pride?
To Jesus Through Mary
I am not exactly sure the context of what you are asking, but my SD told me once that when I beat myself up bad after messing up he said it is a covert sign of pride because it's like "How could I ever mess up like that?" Like being surprised at a failure, instead of seeing the truth that I am a weak woman, totally dependent on the grace of God.
Era Might
Believing your strength is worth anything, I suppose. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. [26] For consider your call, brethren; not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth; [27] but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong, [28] God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, [29] so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. [30] He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption; [31] therefore, as it is written, "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord." 1Corinthians 1:25-
GeorgiiMichael
I am not exactly sure the context of what you are asking, but my SD told me once that when I beat myself up bad after messing up he said it is a covert sign of pride because it's like "How could I ever mess up like that?" Like being surprised at a failure, instead of seeing the truth that I am a weak woman, totally dependent on the grace of God. This is along the lines of what I was thinking, too. Self-loathing tends to come from thinking that we have the ability to make ourselves better, and forgetting that God is who we need to rely on and place our trust in. And forgetting that we are loved by God. Edited June 23, 2013 by GeorgiiMichael
dUSt
I have no idea how self loathing is a form of a group of lions. I don't even see a similarity.

Gabriela
I think that this is like boasting of a fast. It was St. Francis (right?) who called out a brother who had announced to the community that he was fasting, then asked if he could go have some reward for his penance, "You have already had your reward, brother." Meaning: You got your jollies off of the attention you got by announcing how righteous you are in your fasting. Similarly, self-loathing is often not true self-loathing, but self-bashing for the sake of feeling good about how humble you are. Which stems from pride. Is that clear? I'm not sure I made that clear... Edited June 23, 2013 by curiousing
