Poorly Catechized Convert
So I went to confession today and I confessed a sin that I had confessed previously. The reason I did this was that I remembered new information that I thought may change the gravity. I couldn't remember if I had provided this information so I thought it would be good to bring up. Well instead of saying all of that I just called it a sin that I had forgot to confess. When I first remembered this sin a few days ago I had planned to mention the extra information, but by today it was in my mind as a forgotten sin. Does this count as a lie, that would invalidate my confession? Also, the priest gave me advice in regards to scruples. Well by investigating whether or not I invalidated my confession I violated this advice. I did do my penance though. So by doing this did I commit a mortal sin? Nihil Obstat
So I went to confession today and I confessed a sin that I had confessed previously. Well by investigating whether or not I invalidated my confession I violated this advice. I did do my penance though. So by doing this did I commit a mortal sin? First off, relax. :smile3: Your confession was valid. If you remember new information about a sin, it is ok to bring it back to confession, if it makes you feel better about it. If you sincerely forgot the first time, it was forgiven anyway. But if it is better for your conscience, it is fine. That said, it sounds like your confessor thinks you are suffering from scupulosity, and based on this post he is probably correct. :P That does not mean it is a sin for you to struggle with it. He is giving you advice that will, over time, make things better in this respect. Work at following his advice, work at controlling your scrupulosity, and above all trust in the grace of the sacrament, because you are forgiven. Your intentions, presumably, have been pure, and as long as they are, you are fine.
Poorly Catechized Convert
Thanks. For the first part I guess the primary problem was that I felt that by calling it a forgotten son I was being untruthful. For the second part I may have mostly felt bad. This was more first time confessing to this priest and he handled my scrupulousity better than any other priest. I did think that violating advice may be so.similar to not doing the penance. My mind was jumping back and forth between thinking it would be mortal sin and thinking it wasn't. Sadly by the time I posted I had the thought that if it was a mortal sin I was already guilty, but if it wasn't I needed to know so that I'd stop worrying.
