Noel's angel
OK, firstly, we don't have 'Protestant' schools. We have Catholic maintained schools and state schools. I went to a Catholic grammar (the grammar school/comprehensive school thing is a whole other debate), my brothers went to a state comprehensive. 'Integrated' schools have been popping up around the place, but in my opinion, they are totally unnecessary. They are basically state schools that allow a bit of time for Catholics to have separate religion classes. This, to me, is more divisive as children are in the same CLASS all day APART from when it is time for their religious eduction. I grew up with no hostility towards those who didn't attend my school. I made friends with Protestant children in my neighbourhood and through other activities in my community. I thought nothing of the fact that most of the people who went to my school were Catholic and most of those who went to other schools were Protestant. (You don't have to be a Catholic to attend a Catholic school). I also have a problem with the idea that in Northern Ireland, we all 'hate' each other and want to kill each other. It's nonsense. For the most part, people want to, and do, get along. It is about time that people stopped talking about us as they would have 30 years ago. In my entire 25 years, I've known only 2 people who have owned guns (one was a policeman, the other a neighbour who collects)...We've all been called names as children because that's what children do. But Obama shows a complete lack of respect, and displays a fair bit of ignorance, when it comes to this little part of the world.

Gabriela
He said nothing of making a public school he only mentioned that the two groups had separate Schools and buildings (stores etc.). But he said, "We should see ourselves in one other". As Christians we are called to see Christ in everyone so Obama was not that far from the truth. I would say the Jewish Vs. Muslim is a stretch. It is in the Muslim Religion to kill the infidels so to say they should mix is really dumb and dangerous. But like i said above Christians are called to love not kill so calling intermingling between the in public OR PRIVATE (ooo a novelty) schools would be for the country. P.S. I don't support Obama yet i do not think his the spawn of the devil that only speaks evil. If Obama was not a moron and had terrible policies I think he would be a good leader. I largely agree with you here, Oremoose, but I think that your second paragraph implies that if Jewish and Muslim kids went to school together, the Muslim kids would kill the Jewish kids. Jews and Muslims lived together for hundreds of years quite peacefully. I don't know enough about Islam (either in antiquity or modernity) to suggest why that may have worked. But I'm pretty sure that "infidels" does not apply to "people of the Book," who include both Jews and Christians. I also am 100% positive that not everything that is "in one's religion" actually gets done. Jews and Muslims go to school together in many countries. It works out just fine, for the most part. I think that what makes the difference is not what is stated in either's religion but the larger discourse surrounding "the other" going on at the national cultural level. That would explain why inter-mixing can work in the US and Europe, but why it is impossible in Israel. (Though, if I'm not mistaken, there are a very few schools in Israel where both Jewish and Muslim students study. Certainly this is the case at many universities inside Israel.) Lil Red
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/deaconsbench/2013/06/catholic-league-reaction-by-conservatives-to-obamas-speech-in-ireland-is-simply-insane/ There are plenty of reasons to be critical of President Obama’s policies as they relate to the Catholic Church, and I have not been shy in stating them. But the reaction on the part of conservatives, many of whom are Catholic, over his speech in Ireland, is simply insane. Never did Obama say he wants “an end to Catholic education.†Indeed, he never said anything critical about the nature of Catholic schools. It makes me wonder: Have any of his critics bothered to actually read his speech? Read more at the link. Edited June 21, 2013 by Lil Red

Gabriela
On a side note, am I the only person who's noticed that Israel aims it's propaganda at right wing conservative Christians and Palestinians focus their propaganda machine on Liberals? I went to both liberal and conservative colleges and I was really annoyed by this. That is just common-sense PR, CatholicsAreKewl. And one more reason I believe all PR is evil. OK, I'm a bit confused why they're getting in a tizzy about such a tiny part of the world, but Obama shouldn't have stuck his nose into things he clearly doesn't understand. cappie
Maybe this is the problem..................In October 1967, Obama and his mother moved to Jakarta to rejoin his stepfather. The family initially lived in a newly built neighborhood in the Menteng Dalam administrative village of the Tebet subdistrict in South Jakarta for two and a half years, while Soetoro worked on a topographic survey for the Indonesian government. From January 1968 to December 1969, Obama's mother taught English and was an assistant director of the U.S. government-subsidized Indonesia-America Friendship Institute, while Obama attended the Indonesian-language Santo Fransiskus Asisi (St. Francis of Assisi) Catholic School run by the Capuchin Friars, around the corner from their house for 1st, 2nd, and part of 3rd grade :hehe2: Edited June 22, 2013 by cappie

Laudate_Dominum
I don't like to attribute motivations to other people - it's hard to know what's going on in other people's heads. On the other hand, especially with public figures, we have to at least try to figure out their patterns of behavior if not motive. I don't necessarily agree that there must be sinister intent behind the statement. But complete lack of understanding is functionally just as bad as sinister intent. ... Clueless. Absolutely clueless. And therefore as dangerous as a bull in a china shop. I don't doubt that the speech was lame. You're not really saying anything that would suggest that I should change my views. Interpreting that video clip as an agenda to end Catholic schools is unjustified. I find many of the comments in this thread to be wacky. That's about it.
