BG45
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kGsrBet0Fb8 Granted, it's in Ireland, where the Catholic/Protestant debate has been extremely violent over the decades. However, the American Papist asks, if he's willing to call for Catholic Schools to be shut down in Ireland, would he do it here?
Socrates
I'm sure he would if he felt he could get away with it. That man is pond scum.

CatholicsAreKewl
Not an Obama supporter by any means but how does his lazy analysis of the Prot/Cath situation in Ireland have to do with his view of Catholic schools in America?
Gabriela
I think you guys are exaggerating and taking this out of context. Certainly the thread title is misleading. I'd call it an outright lie. He didn't say that at all. It's a stretch to even say he implied it. I don't think he's dissing Catholic schools per se. He's dissing "division," and he sees faith-based schools as perpetuating that—which, in Ireland, given the history, they may very well do. RE the link to the full article: Separate, Jewish/Muslim schools in Israel perform the same function as I presume Catholic and Protestant schools do in Ireland. They keep the two separate. If there's not a public school option where everyone can mix—if they want to—then faith-based schools really do keep people separate. That's not to say that's necessarily a bad thing. But in a country where the people of two different groups really seriously hate and frequently kill each other, a little mixing for the sake of understanding that the other is not the devil is a good thing. I'm pretty sure that's all he's sayin'. Relax.

add
To me it sounds like he is portraying catholic's as harmful to society . Seems like a pretty dumb thing to say in a predominately Catholic country.
homeschoolmom
If he calls for such a thing here, he'd have to do away with Protestant schools like Sidwell Friends. I don't think he's going to do that.

Kateri89
Curiousing has a valid point. Although given Obama's history in this country, I could definitely see him trying to shut down Catholic schools. But for crying out loud, isn't this a Catholic forum? Calling the man "pond scum" is pretty low. Aren't we supposed to pray for those who persecute us? Lol, this is a good question. Maybe it just sounded worse on paper? I can't help but be extremely cynical about politicians nowadays.
Laudate_Dominum
How is that "calling for an end" to Catholic schools? He just said his opinion that he thinks they're divisive in Ireland. Maybe he's right. Big deal. Edited June 21, 2013 by Laudate_Dominum
