does anyone know why St. Joseph wasn't there before? I mean, what was the reasoning behind him not being there before?

There's relatively little devotion to Saint Joseph in the first millennium of Christianity. In the early centuries of the Church, when the gist of the Roman liturgy was developed, devotion to the martyrs was all the rage. Saint Joseph became a bigger deal in the late 1800s after being made patron of the Universal Church, and was added to the canon of the Mass by Pope John XXIII around 1960.

Yes, but for the 1962 Missal. For some reason they decided not to carry that over a few years later. No idea as to why, although I am sure somebody out there knows.

Here's my first hunch. The canon (EP1) represented disjointed accretion and verbosity. The new prayers are meant to be streamlined, rooted in ancient sources (allegedly), and ecumenically friendly (particularly with Lutherans and Anglicans in mind). Also, I doubt the dominant members of those study groups cared for the triumphalistic undertones of the "Saint Joseph, Patron of the Church" piety.

Yes. Devotion to St. Joseph was pretty much non-existent in the early Church. It was not until the 14th century that reasons for honoring him began to me mention is scholarly treaties. From then on, development of devotion to St. Joseph was gradual, but definite, until it received great momentum by St. Teresa of Avila. After that, we can see popular devotion to this great saint as growing and attracting favorably the attention of the Popes. Through the years, Popes have enriched the devotion so St. Joseph with official tributes of honor.

Isn't that the ."....and Joseph her most caste spouse" thing.

As a child i thought "poor Joseph getting chased around"

when I learned what that meant I still felt a bit bad for the guy :p
