YAY!

In the first decree of a liturgical nature of this pontificate, Pope Francis has decided that name of St. Joseph should be added to the Eucharistic Prayers II, II and IV, as they appear in the third typical edition of the Roman Missal, after the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

does anyone know why St. Joseph wasn't there before? I mean, what was the reasoning behind him not being there before?

Nihil Obstat

Didn't John XXIII already do this (to the consternation of some traditionalists)?

Yes, but for the 1962 Missal. For some reason they decided not to carry that over a few years later. No idea as to why, although I am sure somebody out there knows.

Was this implemented today? Because Fr. definitely included "and Blessed Joseph, her spouse" during the Eucharistic Prayers today at Mass. :)

I feel like resurrecting the Bad Catholic thread for this, but I'm a bad Catholic probably for not realizing Saint Joseph wasn't already there...

Nah, I think it's one of those things where you would assume he's already in all of them, because he's so important.  :)

Glad to see he's home.   We all can use St. Joseph --- he's very handy when things get broken, things need procuring, or when I need a good talking to.... :paperbag:

How is it that you know this but are not Church Militant?

How come it was decreed May 1st but only announced just now?

And do you think that the state of Western manhood has anything to do with Pope Francis' "pushing it through" now?

Some websites have erroneously reported that that means the name may or must now be inserted by priests using those Eucharistic prayers.  This is incorrect.

Under the Code of Canon Law, new laws do not generally take effect when they are issued.  Rather "a law is established when it is promulgated." (can. 7, emphasis added)  Promulgation is the official announcement  of a law.  This occurs by publishing it in Acta Apostolicae Sedis (AAS), the official commentary on all of the actions of the Holy See.  Note, however, that the canon cited above says "established" not "effective".  A law does not even go into effect on the day it is published in AAS.  The general rule is that a law goes into effect three months after its promulgation. (can. 8)

Therefore, since this new decree has not even been published, it has no legal effect yet.  Therefore, no priest, on his own initiative, should insert the name of St. Joseph into the other Eucharistic Prayers until such time as the decree has been published and the applicable waiting period has elapsed. - See more at: http://ubispiritus.blogspot.it/2013/06/liturgy-law-adding-st-joseph-to-canon.html#sthash.v1SZ5JXy.dpuf
