PhuturePriest
I don't intend for this to be a debate. It's an honest question. Is there anything in the rubrics or somewhere else of equal importance that says you should not clap with the music during Mass? I personally have a huge problem with it, but I don't know if that's me being a traditionalist or if there is an actual liturgical problem with it. Nihil Obstat
No, there is no rubric which indicates that it is an acceptable addition to the Mass.
cmaD2006
And I don't think there is something specifically that says you *can't* clap with the Music in Mass.

Basilisa Marie
Not that I know of. Some people would be against clapping because it's not in the rubrics and may not foster due reverence. Others would be for it because there's nothing prohibiting it and it can be justified under the "inculturation" provision in Vatican II documents. I think most people would agree that clapping isn't appropriate in all (musical) situations, and that clapping *with* music is different from clapping after mass or the homily. So ultimately I think it's something that's up to a bishop's or priest's discretion. Edited June 15, 2013 by Basilisa Marie

RCIA ~ Class of 09
Ugh, I hate that so bad. Uh, that's an understatement....You look like you're going to pop a blood vessel in your forehead whenever we go to a Parish that does it
Nihil Obstat
Have any Popes or Saints commented on it? Probably not, because it would have been absolutely foreign to the Liturgy, and rightly so, until our weird modern era.
Tony
rubics or no rubics.. it's annoying :o
Noel's angel
Rubrics aren't really there to list all the things we shouldn't do/have at Mass. If it's not in, it's out. So whilst I don't believe it says anywhere: "No clapping along with the hymns," it does not give an option FOR clapping along...therefore....don't clap. It doesn't say anywhere that we can't have someone riding an elephant up during the offertory procession, but we wouldn't do that.
Quid Est Veritas?
If there's no provision for it, then I think it's logical to conclude that it shouldn't be done. And as a hardline Gregorian chant lover, I have issues with music that lends itself to clapping along anyway. :P
mysisterisalittlesister
I don't see anything wrong with clapping at something like a Stubenville Youth Conference or a Catholic camp. But yeah, clapping to regular church hymns is just weird.
Amppax
I don't see anything wrong with clapping at something like a Stubenville Youth Conference or a Catholic camp. But yeah, clapping to regular church hymns is just weird. The question then arises, is a Holy Mass at a youth conference or something similar son Ina way that is in keeping with the rubrics? I'm not saying it isn't, I'm actually trying to sort through all of this myself.
