Dr. Bombay
Well there is the whole Pauline Missal thing. . . Oh. That one might leave a mark....
Anastasia13
I think all of us have seen just how damaging a cult of personality can be. We simply have to keep things in perspective. If Evangelicals like Pope Francis, then great. Hopefully they all become Catholic. But they should become Catholic because Catholicism is true. Like I said, perspective. That is all. QFT. Nihil Obstat
What Pauline missal thing? No religious popes would have celebrated Mass according to the Pauline Missal. ;)
GeorgiiMichael
Dude you get mad about things really quickly. :smile3: Frustration does come off as anger via the internet. But anger does come when people are talking as if Francis is actually attempting to garner the favor of Evangelicals, which is what Apo and L&T were doing. dUSt
This thread is a great example of the quote, "The biggest thing that discourages Catholics from embracing tradition is traditionalists." I just made up that quote, so I guess I just quoted myself in the present tense.

We (at least I) dislike only celebrating that evangelicals like the Pope. That is great and wonderful, but that is not everything and may or may not change anything for many of them. We are both converts, and we both know that there is more to that transition than simply liking the pope, and how much it can take to convert. We know what it is like to convert for reasons other than the pope and at least I see focusing too much on liking who the current leader is as something that can even detract from real reasons to convert, and as something that will die off with the current pope on day. Appreciation of the substance of the faith is deeper than the current pope and transcends who leads the church atm. Liking the pope is like looking at crumbs. It does not mean they are eating the crumbs, much less enjoying the meal. Edited June 17, 2013 by Light and Truth

Unless of course they stop looking at him as the "current leader" and start looking at him as "The Vicar of Christ".
Anastasia13
Unless of course they stop looking at him as the "current leader" and start looking at him as "The Vicar of Christ". That takes a lot more theology than a popularity cult.

That is the idea. Which is why, strictly speaking, it is not a priority if Pope Francis is 'liked' by Evangelicals. It is a priority that he is recognized as the Vicar of Christ. It is a probably-useful intermediate step, but it is neither a necessary nor sufficient condition of converting to the Truth. But nobody said it was the priority that he's liked. We've said it's great that he's liked by the Evangelicals, and that this is very promising, but I don't believe I've read anyone say thus far "The only thing that matters is that he's liked. If people convert solely because of him, awesome!"
